I'm just glad all my friends are mature enough to know blazing up at someone's wedding reception would be inappropriate.

Seriously, I've asked a police officer this question, searched the internet, and multiple posters who are either in law enforcement or know someone in law enforcement have said this isn't the case.

I neither give a fuck what your friend or the Internet says about whether or not off-duty officers can make arrests, nor am I required to provide you with a source. The OP has indicated that it is illegal in her state, and regardless of what the law officers can or cannot do about it, she could get in very big trouble with the law if her pot smoking friends light up. She has the right to do whatever is possible to keep that from happening-including warning her friends against it.

I never said she shouldn't warn her friends that law enforcement would be there.

All I was saying is that the claim that several posters made that if a police officer suspects that someone is smoking they HAVE to report it isn't true. Several posters, including myself, have given evidence that this just isn't true. You are the only person who hasn't offered ANY support for your argument. If you want to make claims that certain things could lose someone their job, you should be able to give some support of this.

You are truly making a mountain out of a molehill and unnecessarily panicking the OP.

The police officers may not be required or able to make any arrests themselves, but depending on the rules of their specific jurisdiction, they may be required to call in and report, and on-duty cops may then be required to investigate and make arrests. That would be awful for the OP and her guests. I think that if said guests are, despite a warning that this could happen and requests not to, determined to smoke pot anyway, then the OP should stand up for herself and if necessary start World War III if someone gives her a hard time about it.

I almost think you might be over thinking this one. You know your situation best and if I'm wrong then for sure disregard this but I happen to have a lot of family and friends that smoke pot, a LOT, and while everyone has always had a good time at every gathering, everyone knows ya know. The pot smokers are mostly discrete and the non pot smokers mostly pretend not to know. I would be seriously surprised ever if one of my friends or family took out a joint and actively started smoking it in front of people they didn't know obnoxiously.

You said your FIs friends all ran off into the woods to smoke pot? Did everyone know that's why they ran off or just you? I think a lot of people don't notice the missing people or wonder where they are. If no one notices, does it make a big splash?

I also think that above poster got it right saying that no one will show up positive on a drug test from walking through some second hand smoke and that they will know not to be in a situation that isn't good for them. If one of your guests is an off duty cop and feels the need to arrest the pot smokers, then isn't that their fault for smoking pot? But I doubt that would ever happen.

In Michigan you cannot smoke within a facility (and no less than 10 feet from the door) - except for casinos run by Indian tribes. I've seen a lot of people gather outside of the main doors just to light up.
