Worst Baby Names

Re: Worst Baby Names

  • My parents were thinking of naming me Susan. I don't mind it, but definitely doesn't fit me.  My name is not very common, though not unusual enough to make people think.  If I hear it, I turn cos generally I'm the only one of me there.  It's confusing when you're not used to it.

DH was named after his Dad.  His parents called him by a Spanish nickname, and still do to differentiate between them both.  It's an actual nickname, not a different name (kinda like how the French call kids petit chou/little cabbage).  He swears he'd never name a kid his name cos it's Spanish and not common out here.  He was always a bit embarrassed of it growing up once he left Chile.

My cousin is named after his Dad, but is called by him middle name to tell them apart.  He's only even been know to everyone as his middle name.

  • Can we please stop calling names "low rent?" That's horrible. "I'm sure glad my name doesn't make me sound poor! Oh, the horror! Anything but poor."

Hi, yes please. That wasn't the first ignorant comment in this thread.

I apologize for using the phrase "low rent"; poor word choice on my part. I did not mean it as poor at all, I meant is as uneducated/unclassy. I was just trying to defend my name, since I was getting the feeling that's what people thought about every name with a  Y where it normally doesn't go.

Uneducated isn't necessarily a bad thing either.

Dad wanted Gavin or Fynn for a boy, my mom wanted Marc, Gerard, or Noel. True story my male best friend's name (also our donor for our feature kid) is named Fynn.

Sophie went her entire life usually being the only Sophie. Now go out the mall "Sophie! Sophie! Sophia get your ass back here!"....it's awesome. For me. For her it's going "What?" and then realizing not her but rather the small child running off.

I got asked once, by an adult, if my parents named me after Fiona from Shrek. Shrek came out in 2001. I was born in 1986. I don't think my parents are time travelers...
I LOVE the name Sophie. But it's super popular now, and I named my cat Sophie (<less important). Whenever I joke about our future children with FI though I always call her Sophie (apparently our future child is a girl?). Another one of those man, I used a good name on a pet situations.

I, too, love the name Sophie and named my cat Sophie, but I did it with full knowledge that it would be out as a future baby name. Sophie was so popular 10 years ago (and it's still pretty popular), and I didn't want my kid to have a trendy name, even if it is classic. Also, I was going to name a baby girl Sophie after Sophie Scholl, a resistance activist who was executed by the Nazis. There probably aren't a lot of cats out there with such a heavy origin story for their name...

If we were having a girl she would have been Eliza, after Eliza Bennett (Pride & Predjudice). The sad thing is, I really would have loved to name her Eliza Jane (Jane is my mom's name), but I just couldn't do that to a child. Since it's a boy, we kind of avoided that whole thing...unless we have a girl some day. Baby William is named after both of his grandfathers. It's my FIL's first name and my dad's middle name.

I have an old lady name. Several PPs have mentioned it as being classic, but it hasn't been in the top ten since the turn of the (previous) century. I also go by the full name, not a nickname. None of the nicknames, which most of the people my age who have the same name go by, work with my last name, so it's always just been Blergbot. Not Blerg or Bot. The other girl name in the running was Lucinda, which I actually always liked better than my own name, though most people hate it. My parents were determined in having an old lady, not a little girl, I guess.

If I were a boy my name would have been Matthew, after my dad's youngest brother who died tragically in a car accident when he was 19. I'm the youngest cousin on that side, so my oldest cousin already took Matthew, but she actually knew him, so that feels right, I guess.

I do not understand this reference. Who is or was Bruce Wayne?
  • I worked with a man named Harry Dick (no joke, the poor guy!)

I also worked with a guy whose last name is Mycock.  His pipefitting company name?  You guessed it-Mycock Fits!

I love weird names and hate when parents go with boring common names. So I judge and believe the worst baby names are Ashley, Alyssa, Emily, Jennifer, Michael, John, James, Muhammad, and other variations that are rinse and repeated 10000 times.

inb4 everyone yells at me because I list their  favorite name/their personal name. Please see sig.
My sons name is James and it took a lot of getting used to the idea of that. We named him after his grandfather that passed away some years ago, he was a great man. But still, it took a while for me to actually tolerate it. I don't want people to call him Jimmy or Jim...yuck

I dislike odd spellings.... I've met a baby girl named "Izzabella" and wondered what drugs the parents were taking when they decided on that spelling (apparently mom WAS on drugs). BM has a daughter that is Madeline but spelled Madilin. The spelling looks like Penicilin to me and I feel like such a shitty friend when I think about that. I find it interesting that I hate alternative spellings because growing up I experimented with different spellings of my own name. I love the name Amy/Aimee but I worry that if I use Aimee (the French version) people will think I'm trying to be "yoonique". I would just go with Amy.

YES! DH's family is French-Canadian so our last name is very French. He likes all the French spelled names like Marc & Luc but I won't let him because people here will just think we spelled it wrong.
My name is Amy and I get asked all the time how it is spelled.

  • I hate to say this, but there is usually a direct correlation between the use of weird-ass spellings and the mother's educational and/or drug-using background...

Oh yeah, and giving all your kids names that sound alike is also kind of lame. My FI and his 3 siblings all have names that start with "W" and he HATES it.

My niece is Lillian, named after my grandmother. My sister had planned that name for her daughter since we were kids. She always used to go by Lily, but this has become one of the most popular girls names recently and my niece was sick of being one of about 5 Lilys in her 2nd grade classroom, so she decided she would only go by Lillian. And she's adamant about it! She either yells at you or refuses to respond if you address her as Lily. Haha!

I think there's a sweet spot in terms of name popularity. Something that generally makes it into the top 100 most popular names but is never in the top 10...

  • Let's not forget this gem of a name: Hyphernkemberly.

She is an awful woman from NJ who was just in the news about a week ago for setting her baby on fire.

  • met a girl at summer camp when I was 13 whose name was Precious Joy.

And she went by the full Precious Joy. I had the hardest time calling her by her name. I just couldnt take it seriously. And If you shortened it to just Precious she would correct you "Actually, My name is Precious Joy. I would appreciate it if you called me by my full name"

    She sure was precious....

I just remembered a woman on SYTTD who's name was Queen Precious Jewel Earth (?)
Just came across Julee-Anne...same amount of letters so why the 'ee'?

My FIL's friend wanted to name his first daughter Markievicz after the woman in the 1916 easter rising in Dublin. That got vetoed so first son was named Pearse after the leader Patrick Pearse...

I'm not a fan of the names Molly or Ellie.

  • I went to school with more than one girl named Princess. I went to Catholic school and had a lot of Filipina classmates and apparently it was somewhat common for expats in my area...but other kids definitely didn't get it and made fun of them quite a bit. But...Princess.

I would've had to smack her, it just would have been inevitable. Seriously? Precious Joy? I'm not calling anyone that even if they are a joy, which it sounds like she wasn't.
