:(

Our dog, Lillie, the cute one in my sig managed to open a door and eat my new shoes.

This isn't the first time she's done this either. She did it last week (oh wow..a fcking week ago today). FI left our door open and she ate 100$ of shoes.

So. We're getting rid of her and I feel horrible since it was my idea to get a job and FI got her for us on my birthday. :\

Re: :(

  • So...your FI left a door open that he shouldn't have and she ate your shoes, and then you didn't learn to put them where she can't get to them, and she did it again, so you're GETTING RID OF HER?!

You suck.  Seriously.  I hope you don't get more pets in the future.  That's really crappy.

You know you can train a dog not to eat shoes, right? Are you taking her to a shelter, or what? I think it's pretty crappy that your first response to your dog eating shoes is to get rid of her. Obviously you weren't prepared to have a pet and the dog is the one getting punished for that.

  • Staci. . I find your posts fun to read and like you in general as a knottie. . but I've got to say that IMO. . .I find it pretty crappy to get rid of a dog because he/she ate some shoes. There are a lot of different options to fix that problem. I just personally don't feel that giving her away is the correct one.

Good luck with that though, she's really cute and Im sure she loves you guys a lot. She's probably just really bored and needs to be more stimulated. Are there any other options that you could do instead of getting rid of her? Behavioral training? Toys? Crating when your not home?

Lucy pulled my wallet down the other day and literally ate money out of it, about 20 bucks. . and thats most certainly not the worst that she's done, but I would NEVER just get ride of her because of that. She's my baby!

  • You're getting rid of her because of that? Wow, pretty pathetic excuse. Maybe crate her while you're gone? Give her a stuffed Kong or something for boredom? Baby gates? Training? There are tons of things to try. My dogs have chewed up plenty of shoes, but its usually mine or H's fault for not watching them or not excercising enough. I'd never give them away for that though.

  • FFS, puppies (and adult dogs that weren't trained) CHEW THINGS.  It's usually a sign of poor training, not enough exercise, or being bored.  It tends to be more of a problem with the owners of the dog, not the dog itself.

You know what?  I changed my mind.  Give her to someone that will actually care for her properly.

    I'm so disgusted.

  • Wow.  Just... Wow.  My dog chewed up a pair of shoes last week.  I would NEVER give her up because I was stupid enough to leave something sitting around that she may think is a toy.

    Just.  Wow.

  • Yeah, I gotta agree with everyone else on this one. That's a pretty lame reason to just go and get rid of her.

You could try training her, crating her, or simply doggy proofing your home. There are already so many homeless animals out there. I would rethink that decision.
  • I can't believe that you are going to get rid of her over something that you as a pet owner can't take accountability for, thats just sad.

  • My dog ate rugs, oak table legs, drywall, her own doggie door for crying out loud when I first adopted her.  She has outgrown the destructive phase and is the best dog.  Treat stuff Kongs and Nylabones are very durable chew toys.  To give her up because of this makes me sick.

Gotta say I'm happy for the dog though. Hopefully in a couple years her first home will be all but a distant unpleasant memory.

  • Shes got well over 50 toys in the house, scattered (chews, treat balls, ropes, you name it..all of them are chewed on). and the door was closed today so she broke into the bedroom and our closed closet. Sorry.

We've tried training her. She ate her crate and its cruel to leave a dog outside in the Texas heat. And yes, we're taking her to a no kill shelter.

She doesn't respond well to training (but she won't pee in the house). She doesnt like crates (See the note about her chewing on her crate).

Call me a horrible pet owner. I don't  fcking care right now. Its just that nothing works and my FI is making us get rid of her. I would love to keep her and train her more and more but it isn't working.

Sorry, I dont feel like having to shell out another hundred bucks to replace things I need because our dog chewed on it.

    Call me what you want.

Dogs=/=kids. I'm so sick of this analogy. It's not really applicable because you're comparing apples to oranges. I still think OP is a crappy pet owner, but I'm not going to take that so far as to say she shouldn't have kids.

  • OP, do you also give back Easter chicks once they become full chickens? I think we need to have a talk about the circle of life.

  • People here are not giving you helpful advice.  So I will.  Your dog is eating your shoes.  Here's what you need to do.  Get today's paper.  Roll it as tightly as you can.  Tape it so that it stays rolled.

Now, leave your closet door open, and be sure that the shoes are readily accessible to the dog.  Allow the dog to get into the closet.

As soon as she starts to chew on a shoe, take that rolled up newspaper, and with as much force as you can, hit yourself on the head with it  over and over and over while saying "Stupid owner.  Stupid owner.  Stupid owner."
"Trix, it's what they/our parents wanted. Why so judgemental? And why is your wedding date over a year and a half ago? And why do you not have a groom's name? And why have you posted over 12,000 posts? And why do you always say mean things to brides?" palegirl146
  • Oh, I don't think you want to know what I want to call you.  It might get me banned.

How long have you had the dog?  What's your training method?  You can't expect miracles overnight.  Are you experienced dog owners?  If not, professional training is ALWAYS a good idea (even if you ARE experienced).

But it doesn't matter, because that dog deserves a home that won't banish her because she has some behavioral issues that the owners are too lazy to take care of properly themselves.  If I lived in your area, I'd take her in myself.  I feel pretty bad for her.

Then you're obviously not using the correct traiing methods, because any dog can be trained.  However, it takes time & dedication and not just ad hoc because you feel like it.  I would be inclined to say she's getting into trouble because she's bored.

  • Ha, you really shouldn't get another dog then if you can't handle it. Sounds like she needs more exercise and maybe doggy daycare a few times a week to cure some boredom. I would of tried a behaviorist (different than a trainer), but it sounds like your mind is already made up.

Rudy. . our tabby cat (5yrs) who was abandoned at our vets office pees in the laundry room floor when her litterbox isn't clean enough. I used to just clean it once a day, but after realizing WHY she was doing it, I now clean it 2 - 3 times a day (we have two cats). While it drives me and DH CRAZY. . I wouldn't toss her out either. She's already been abandoned once (probably because of the peeing issue), I couldn't do it to her again.

D'Artagnan, our new dog peed on Lucy which she was in her house (marking) when he first came to our home. Im sureee Lucy wasn't very happy about that, but he's a dog and it was the first time he was in our home and didnt know better (was previously an outside dog).

Regardless, they're pets / animals and they need to be taught by their owners.

  • I also find it off-putting that your FI is "making [you] get rid of the dog." Something like this should be a joint decision.

I don't think it's the case.  I think it's backpedaling to try to take even less accountability for the situation.  I bet she's the one who wants to get rid of the dog because she ate her precious shoes.

  • Ah, good point, J&K and Linger. Too bad that won't work either. I'd have about the same level of respect for someone who let their FI kick out their dog as I would for someone who kicked the dog out themselves.

    Have fun with that.

  • You don't want to "shell out another 100"... seriously.  Do you hear yourself?

Do the dog a favor and give it to the shelter... maybe they can find a family that will love it and train it properly.

Then, stay away from animals/pets... forever.

  • You say your FI left your door open?  Well, guess what.  That makes this his fault -- not the dog's.  You'd better get rid of him too.

Then again, the poor thing would probably be better off with someone who doesn't think the solution to happy tail wagging is to cut off the tail.
