  • My dog svcked in her training classes too.  But you know what, we kept going and I worked with her on her training at home.  She got better and in fact just yesterday a woman complimented me on her great behavior.  Any decent dog trainer will tell you that positive reinforcement works best -- not negative like "popping on the nose"! If i catch her making a mess where I have to clean it up, I don't freak out, I calmly put her outside and clean up the mess.  Then I bring her back inside as if nothing happened.  Dogs get a kick out seeing you clean up their mess.

I still think you should get rid of her.  You're a shiitty pet owner, and that's not going to change.

    FTW!
  • Your dog has abandonment/attention issues. ANyone can tell that by what you are describing. It should be common sense that punishment is not going to get you any results. THrowing her outside will make her feel even more abandoned. Pay attention to her and take care of her. THAT will help the issues.

  • For the record, I don't equate pets and children. I don't think you should breed -- but not because I think you'd get rid of your kids the first time they were responsible for $100 or more in property damage. I don't think you should breed because you do not need to contaminate the gene pool with your stubborn idiocy and utter lack of human compassion.

As for the tail: if it was truly a last resort for the sake of the dog's health, fine. That's fair. But I have no reason whatsoever to believe that someone whose first impulse is to "get rid" of a dog when it becomes destructive or inconvenient or {gasp!} expensive would go to any lengths at all to deal with a medical issue. You obviously aren't dealing with the behavioral ones.

You DO realize that this was the WRONG place to post this right?  You have been around long enough to know we are all huge animal lovers so you walked into this.

Now, had you come in venting and looking for advice, we would all be blowing this thread up right now trying to figure out ways to help you and your doggie.  Instead, you post about getting rid of your dog so now we are blowing YOU up!

Read Cesar Milan's book - how to raise the perfect puppy.  AT least a few chapters of it.  I've never had a dog before in my life and neither has my FI, it helped me immesnely before we started training classes.  We have 2 jack russells and they're nothing like what people told us they would be like, and as HelloKatie said we attribute a lot of that to postiive reinforcement, and patience/consistency.
    1. exercise
    2. discipline
    3.affection!!

I am guessing you give her too much of 3 and not 1 and 2...

Also, please give to dog away while it's still a puppy!!! it has a much better chance of being adopted.

  • This one time (like 11 years ago), DH rescued this husky, that was left tied to a pole by his job and was about to be taken by animal control...and he was maybe 21 at the time and lived alone. When he took her home, she constantly had diarrhea (we suspect she was abused because she was very timid) all over the place and chewed EVERYTHING in his apartment. So, did he get rid of her??? Um, no! He took some time, money and patience and bought her a good crate and trained her. She eventually became an amazing dog through training her properly and had the run of the house for the past 8 years and doesn't touch a thing now. We still have her 11 years later!

Moral of the story is that puppies and dogs need time, love patience and training. You do not get rid of them because they do not fully meet expectations. If you give her away, you will only HOPE that she gets a good owner. I would never give my dog away! Especially not knowing who they are going to.

I thought you said you wanted the dog to be somewhere it will be happy? clearly being with you and your FI is not that place. I honestly don't understand why you think keeping the dog now is best. You yourself said keeping a dog outside in the Texas heat is cruel.

You mention that all we do here is jump down posters throat. What do you call what you are doing by calling PP dumb and stupid? When clearly you seem to be defining yourself with those words.

    REALLLLLLYYYYY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

At this point we all think you are an a-hole supreme so I will be sure to constantly nag you for update pics of your dog.

Now.....since most of us here are seasoned dog owners, is there anything you would like to know in order to HELP you and the dog out?  Really Stacie, as pissed as I am right now over this dog business....Im still willing to help you out for the sake of the dog.

    My first advice is this:

    1) Get rid of your fvucking trainer but before you do, pop his asssss in the nose reallllyyyy good for all of us.  I firmly believe your dog needs a good trainer and I promise promise you that with A LOT of patience and A LOT of time spent with him, he WILL become a well behaved dog and be obedient, etc.  For the sake of you and the FI, do this!

    2)  Go right NOW and buy "such and such dog Training for Dummies"  I have a yellow lab so the 1st book I bought was "Labrador Retrievers for Dummies"  That book was read from front to back and then referenced many times after that and it was very very helpful.

    Good luck!!

  • WOW really! How about you try some "Bitter Apple", spray it on your shoes so the dog won't chew them. I could never get rid of my dog, if he ate my shoes..or for any other reason. My FMIL's dog chewed her shoes, remote to the tv, and Kate Spade glasses...he still lives with her. Guess some people aren't meant to be pet owners. Hope your dog finds a better family!! • And earlier you said FI was going to pay for the shoes, not you, and you certainly didn't seem to be upset then.

You need a different training course. Maybe multiple. Some dogs need more than one. Any training course that recommends corporal punishment for dogs is not going to get you anywhere, and is most likely the reason your dog was "the worst in the class." Dogs learn by reward not by punishment. They learn fear by punishment.

So by tossing the dog in the backyard, you've taught her to be afraid of you. And probably, to be afraid of most people.

    Brilliant move, Einstein.
