This is just getting more bizarre. If this is even true, then she's still guilty of incredibly poor judgment for posting those thoughts here in the form of "and now we are getting rid of her." That sure sounds like a plan to me. It's also her general mindset toward the dog's behavioral issues that people are appalled at. That's not a mistake or a misunderstanding, it just is what it is. You said yourself that you are objecting to her flaming because you like her, so you can't expect anyone to take your arguments logically or seriously.

Because it takes longer than 1 week to try and train a dog.....and if you are doing things differently than someone else the dog gets confused.

If you want to train a dog, especially one with an abusive history, behavioral issues or deeply ingrained poor behavior, it's going to take longer than a week. So...your attempted solution really wasn't very well thought out. Much like your sister's idea to buy the dog in the first place.
This just reminded me of an incident we had last night with our two dogs. We have a chipom ( Stetson) and a blue heeler lab (Fletch). We came into the bedroom to find the FI mouthpiece he wears at night (grinds his teeth) on the floor almost chewed in half. So we toss the mouthpiece on the floor between them and go okay who did this. Stetson just slowly looked away and we go oh Stetson bad bad dog! He slowly turned, tail between his legs, head down and slowly walked into the other room. We were laughing so hard we couldn't even be mad at him. Then Fletch sees the mouthpiece as fair game and picks it up and runs around the house tossing it in the air. So funny, just love them. Newho the point of the story is, things get ruined, dogs are bad sometimes, but they still love you and didn't intend to make you mad. They will act out for attention, so give them extra love and affection. Take some time to show them what they did wrong. It becomes repetitive, but if your consistent they will catch on.
    Posted by Stevie84
that is the worst advice...giving them attention when they did something 'bad' actually tells them to KEEP the behavior up because it gets them attention!! you can't "SHOW' a dog what they did wrong, they are not human. You train them and use positive reinforcement. Showing a dog it's urine on the carpet doesn't mean jack to them. Praising them when they go in the backyard does.

    Are you fvucking serioussssss!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Many years ago, I was staying at friends house and her dog (a bassett) got into my bag and chewed up my glasses - put a tooth right through the lens.

I was really pissed - but I certainly didn't make her get rid of her dog because of it - but I learned my lesson to be sure to keep my stuff out her reach.

Moral of the story - train your animals well, with all the best you can give them and keep your sh!t outta their reach.

Of course, I also went without glasses for about 5 years because I wasn't in a position to afford new ones (my early life as an "adult" weren't as smooth as I'd hoped) and neither her nor her mother offered to replace mine.

I assumed she didn't actually dock the tail, so because of that I took this as an empty threat because she is angry about the shoes. I didn't know she actually did the tail thing which makes be think she would actually give the dog away. Does that make sense? before I thought she was just saying stuff but never doing it.
soso0o0o I have a question. If your dog keeps biting its tail and you've done cones/medicines and everything and an infection keeps going back and forth and its been an open wound for 8 months would one dock its tail?

WeeEeEeeellll, most of us have already come to the conclusion that YES we would do that. However, that wasn't the problem here.

In that case, I think it would almost be like a human with an infected limb that needed amputated. Obviously you would try everything possible to fix it and it would be a last resort.

Before anyone freaks out-not saying dogs and humans are the same. Just saying the principle is the same. A tail is a limb to a dog.

Depends on what is wrong with it. A vet should be seeing it since it could be:

allergies (to food, environmental, or fleas)
    "happy tail"
    nervous issues
mange which could get infected causing pain thus chewing
    etc

edit for the record my dog had issues with a toe for just about a year...they had to finally amputate the toe because of a bone infection....so yeah sometimes it takes time.
