In Response to Re: FFF : Oh I agree with you, I was being sarcastic. I think it's moronic quite frankly. Do we still walk around with our men in leather skirts, pike in hand? No. So what is there to be offended by? Besides the fact that, from my perspective at least, it's kind of neat that the culture gets carried on, even in the form of a mascot, because people will know about it. And that's really all that matters, that the history isn't forgotten.
    Posted by alixzafiris
Yes, yes, yes.  All of this.

I don't care what your mascot is.  But I will say - Trojans for a HS is probably a bad choice.  I've seen WAY too many condom jokes for that one.

And seriously, if you didn't do it, I totally flame whoever DID do it and is going to let you take the blame for their craptasticness.

Because I refuse to believe that you'd have a troll that bad.
In Response to Re: FFF : I'm not saying it should insult you.  I'm saying that it's ridiculous to be offended by the name and image of one out of date culture (I get that natives still live here, but I think we can agree that they bear little resemblance now to what they were before the Europeans moved in) but not when that same name is used to represent another out of date culture. Edit:  Some may call this a hypocrisy.
    Posted by wadingmoose
I think the difference is that a lot of Native Americans don't view thier culture as out of date.

I remember when the NA museum opened here in DC a few years ago it was disappointing to a lot of people, because there was this hodgepodge of random modern stuff in there. But it was the tribes themselves who designed the museum exhibits, and they don't view themselves as relics. At least, that's what I remember (I may have the details wrong).

But, like most PPs said, if the Sioux aren't bitching about their name being used, I'm not sure why anyone else is.

  • I'd have to hazard a guess that if Mandy is music and lyrics, she's done it with Alix. So, they would both be M&L!
  • Since I can't have my adopted family and my biological family in the same place at the same time, I thought about having two weddings.  I decided not to, but I won't judge someone who does (unless it's for a seriously stupid reason -- like MOAR PRESENTS!!!!!111!1111!!).

Sometimes I think we're so eager to remind people that they aren't special snowflakes that we forget that some circumstances are unusual, if not actually unique.

Not a flame, just an observation since we're on the subject.

This. I was starting to wonder if I was the only one amused by M&L. Mandy, I gotta give kudos, that was a good one IMO! I'm actually kinda sad that it's out now.

So is this coming out week for trolls? Because I have a few more I'm wondering about. And no one has responded about Loco yet, so I'm starting to think it's one of YOU. *points fingers*

No, the people themselves are NOT relics.  They also no longer live the lifestyle they did before they were invaded, moved to reserves (in Canada) and had that now out of date lifestyle ripped away from them.  Who they were and who the sports teams originally honored were brave warriors fighting for their families, homes and country.

That is NOTHING to be ashamed of at all.
