Re: Monday Night

  • I have never had a bad experience from a gyno. I have had an irregular pap smear and had to have a LEEP procedure done but I never was caused emotional distress from any of it.

[QUOTE]I really don't agree with the hormones and for-profit aspect of BCP. However, due to the craziness that has become my monthly cycle, I had to break down and get back on it. (Also I was on it the two months before our wedding as I would have gotten it that day. No thanks!) ****POSSIBLE TMI **** I don't agree with pelvic exams because I feel they are extremely invasive and cause more emotional distress and physical discomfort in women than positive.

That depends upon your experience. I don't find it comfortable, but I don't find it to be emotionally destabilizing either. FFS, I have to go to the gyno in a country where english isn't the main language and we have to figure out how to find the right words with each other, while I'm sitting there buck azz naked because they don't do the whole coverup thing.

I have heard that pap smear results are read by humans, who are paid per test. So the more they read and the faster they read, the more money they make. So false positives occur frequently from such a practice-more emotional harm.

You've HEARD or you KNOW. There is a huge difference there. I turn 32 oh, um, now, and I've never been given a false positive.

I also had a very negative experience with a gyno, where she took a sample of a sore spot on my inner leg, and told me "I am 99% sure this is herpes" when I was no where near sexually active at 15. She took the biopsy (painful) and gave me literature on herpes. I was devistated. I never got results back, so I then lived with the thought that I had herpes. I went back a year later, and behold-it was negative (a very painful ingrown hair), and I never got a follow up phone call. NO THANK YOU. Living with the thought that you have herpes at 15 royally sucks, especially when you do not. I am, though, quite up to date on herpes facts.

I get this. Your doc was a fear monger. But you HAVE to learn to take your doctor's initial reaction worth a grain of salt. When they didn't call you? You call them. And call them. And call them. If they tell you nothing, guess what? YOU ARE FINE.

It sounds like you had a really bad experience, and I'm sorry for that. But don't run around potentially damaging your health because one doctor out of millions scared you.

From a personal standpoint: when I was 20, my doctor told me I had cancer. I had to go through a crap ton of horrible tests, all the while thinking that my body was trying to kill me. A few weeks later, guess what? I don't have cancer. I don't hold it against my doctor for saying that. In fact, I continued to see him until I moved internationally. You have to understand that a doctor is trained to automatically go straight to worst case scenario. It's not fun, but you have to deal with it. If you don't like the doct, you change.

Seriously. Find a doctor you can trust, and get an exam. Especially if you are having problems with your cycle. There could (or could not) be a serious issue behind all of that. It's really shameful that you would let one doctor ruin your image of all of them for the rest of your life.

  • I was also 19 when I had my first pap smear done. None of my Dr.s ever did them any earlier if you weren't already sexually active.

ETA: the national championship is on ESPN3. To see if your ISP provides it (Comcast does), go to www.espn.com. Click on college football, then click on scores. The option to watch it live should be on the page somewhere.

  • I might use this when I go to the doctor Friday. Its about not needing a pap for the BCP.

I am also looking up the section from The Whole Woman by Germain Greer which first brought to my attention the unneccisary aspects of a lady exam. If I find it, I will link that too.

  • Paps smears produce a lot of false positives. I can see how it can cause some women emotional stress. I once got a false positive at age 21. I was called on a Sunday morning by the doctor with the news. I mean, what doctor calls someone on a Sunday morning with 'good news?' Add in my mom, aunt and a few cousins had cervical at young ages (all before age 31). Well I was freaking out for the next few days.

I still get annuals because of my family history and it didn't have any long term effects on my emotions, but I'm a go-with-the-flow-kind-of-girl. I can see how it could have a lasting effect on other though.

OT - Chef D is barking at the spring door stop. It's so funny. He keeps hitting it and it springs back and hit him in the face.

What differentiates an average host and a great host is anticipating unexpressed needs and wants of their guests. Just because the want/need is not expressed, doesn't mean it wouldn't be appreciated.
  • I realize that I sound super snotty there Nikki, and I'm not trying to be, but I get really frustrated with people who let their fear keep them from knowledge. My mother is a nurse and I have a really good idea of how the medical system works.

  • What Snips said.

I always get my test results, even if I have to call ten times. I've also had four abnormal pap results, and had a colposcopy and a LEEP.

I would much rather get a pap and be told I might have cervical cancer than not get one and not find out until it's too late. It's not like there are distinctive symptoms.

I agree with snippy that letting your fear, or what you "think" you know, hold you back from going to the doctor just isn't smart. Sure, doctors make the wrong diagnosis at times, but they also make the right ones, the ones that save lives.

I had cervical cancer, and if I chose to believe that docs just get paid to make false positives, I probably wouldn't be here. And you know what? If the doc called me a couple months after the diagnosis to say she was wrong, I would have just been happy to not have cancer rather than let that emotionally car me for life. I guess just don't understand how a gyno causes emotional trauma, and that's coming from someone who has experienced more than one count of sexual assault.

Sidenote because it reminded me - I get so annoyed when people bandwagon on the fearmongering when it comes to the Guardasil shot. I will never understand why people choose to let their kids not get vaccinated.

  • Snippy- Thank you for your insight. I have a friend who is going through cervical cancer, and we have a tough time communicating because we are both emotional with our stances on the issue. But of course, we love each other still. I want more opinions on this, as I hope to get them from all of you.

My periods had been really bad when I was younger, then I was on the BCP for years; from age 15-21. Then I went off of it, and worked through the cramps with homeopathic remedies as well as charting myself and the moon. Just the past 6 months it has been getting progressively worse, back to where it was when I was younger.

  • Hi ladies - I'm finally home after a longass day of gym and work. H is away but we're going to Chicago this weekend!

Count me in as another loyal annual gyno-exam believer. I had an abnormal Pap about 16 months ago, followed up by colposcopy and a LEEP. It's SO much better to catch that shiz early!
  • Nicki, I had cramps like that also. My doctor couldn't figure out a reason for them. I went on BCP and they stopped. I had to try several different BCPs because there were some that I didn't react well to and one that wasn't strong enough. After going off BCP and getting pregnant and now having periods again my cramps are back to what they were before I was on BCP. It's on my list of things I need to talk to my doctor about when I go in to see her.

  • I've had HPV with irregular cell changes, and more recently tested positive for HPV again. When I went to the gyno, she herself had to look up and verify what the treatment was with just a positive HPV and NO irregular cell changes, while I sat there in the exam room with her. Was it odd to me that she had to verify? Maybe a little. Was I greatful that she was checking what the most recent recommendations were? Certainly. Prior to this it was probably recommended to have a copo done. Been there done that, don't want to repeat. Now, if it's just a positive HPV with no cell changes I just wait my for my annual to get tested again.

  • I know to call the doctor for results. Well, I know that now. At 15, I had no idea to do that. I just sat in my room in misery for the first few weeks.

I also do not have insurance at the moment, so my doctor choices are really limited. I like my current doctor that I have through the Community Health Center, but I really don't think he is a prime candidate for q-tipping my cervix.

Sesh- I am in the process of getting the HPV vaccine. I like how it is now offered to men, as well.
