I had a class in undergrad that had an attendance policy that I actually was cool with. My prof would give a 5 point quiz at the beginning of every class, via power point and "Clickers". The quiz was graded, but he dropped your worst 5 scores at the end of the semester. SO you could miss 5 classes with no penalty to your score. I liked that.

<div>I had a class like this and I HATED it because my clicker never worked properly. It was such a POS. The idea was good though.</div>
Yay, I have been wanting to post this: It totally freaks me out to watch the Food Network or any Food stuff on TV when I am at the gym on the treadmill.  This is definitely an irritation for the irrational category... but it just looks so gross and it's like counter to what I'm trying to do- burn calories.  It just grosses me out and distracts me and upsets me. <strong>Also, for all of your grammar people out there, what are your feelings on the word "Ambivalent?"  It's so commonly used to mean "apathetic" when what it REALLY means is that you feel STRONGLY about two opposing things.</strong>  If you look at the roots of the word, you can even tell:  ambi (both) valent (pull).  I never knew this until one of my ex-boyfriends pointed it out to me.  I'm usually pretty good w/ grammar, so I was really shocked to discover how WRONG I was, that it does NOT mean apathetic.. and now whenever I hear people say that, I totally notice.  It doesn't really irritate me that much tho.
    Posted by kinsey0628
<div>
</div><div>Well, the word actually does mean to have mixed feelings about something (dictionary use).  Pulling in both directions would fit with this.</div><div>
    </div><div>You weren't wrong.</div><div>
</div><div>Your use of "tho" for "though" does irritate me, however.

That would suck Anna! Thankfully we didn't have any clicker problems.

I think I'm still bitter from my senior year of HS when I had to petition to get my 3.9 GPA that semester because I missed more than 5 days of class from my depression and staying home. My art teacher gave me the hardest time about it too. God he was a jackass.
In Response to Re: Irritations (rational or otherwise) : I guess so you come back? It is very awkward though. Do I really want to walk up to the front of the class and put my ID in a box so I can pee? Hell no! That's like announcing to the entire 150 people, "I HAVE TO PEE, OK?"

I'm glad my school didn't have crazy policies on missing class.  It was all on you if you wanted to be there or not.

I once missed a month and a half of classes to go down to Florida and compete and my teachers were all freaked out at how I'd manage to survive.  It can be done without going to class.  I still managed a 95% average since I did most of my work before I left.  It was tough, but do-able.  If you have good teachers, you shouldn't have to go to every single class.

At my first University, I had the best prof ever.  He posted all his lectures online, as well as practice exams and a lot of the practice exam questions were on the actual exams.  You literally never had to go to class.

True Story:  I got a B in Physics 152, because I skipped class.  I aced (well not aced, but did really well) all of the tests, but there were these little 10 point things to fill out during lecture.  Since I didn't need to attend lecture to learn physics, I didn't go.  It didn't appear to be affecting my grade online, but that was only because the computer assumed that the grade hadn't been entered not that it was a 0/10.  BOO!!  I didn't realize it until too late.

Hahaha, no I know a lot of people post it as an irritation, but I am totally guilty of that offense.

Also, I will get on board with the irritations when people take the bathroom stall or treadmill right next to you when there are plenty others open.

    I have another one.

I hate it when people say to me "Oh excuse me, ma'am, your headlights are on!"  As I'm walking away from my car after beeping it locked w/ the remote.  I KNOW they are just trying to be nice and helpful... but really, it is the year 2012, my car is TEN years old... the headlights just turn on when I lock it.  They are OBVIOUSLY going to turn off!!!!  Maybe I should be more annoyed at my car than the "helpful" strangers.  Again this goes in the irrational category.

I also had a teacher once who asked me if I was okay to present the day after my grandfather died (it was a group presentation, so I couldn't miss it) and then proceeded to give me a 70% because it "lacked enthusiasm".  Ummm.. ya think?  It was all I could do to keep from breaking down and bawling in front of the class, biitch.  Ugh.

    I have another one.

The cokes in my office are the white winter ones and I can never tell if it's diet or not without checking about three times.

It sounds so silly, but it is REALLY CONFUSING FOR ME, OKAY.

    First world problems.

ETA: Habs, your teacher was a biitch.  What a hag.

Matt told me his firstworldproblem the other day.  I was moving pillows around from our bed to the guest bed after purchasing some new ones.  He said that he really needed 2 pillows to sleep.  Just having 1 was too flat.  But if he got 2 thick pillows that it was too much.  He really needed like 1.5 of those.

    I told him #firstworldproblem.

We had those in our fridge from a party we had and H didn't drink them because the thought they were diet the entire time.  Then once I told him they were regular they were gone so fast!

I have that problem too, MP!

I have one normal pillow and one sad little thin pillow that I stack and it's perfect.
I fuucking hate attendance policies. It is patronizing and condescending to students. Most people I'm in school with right now are either married, getting married, have kids, this is their 2nd career, etc. Emergencies happen and shiit happens and we get penalized SO MUCH for more than a few absences per semester. Excuse me, its my money I'm wasting when I don't show up so fuuck you for trying to play attendance monitor. It really pisses me off.
    Posted by musicalsunlight
I have one class where we were told that the attendence policy is one allowed absence per semester.  One!  Hopefully I won't ever be sick for more than one Tuesday evening in the next 15 or so weeks.  It's graduate school, so it's not like we're a bunch of kids who are there because we have to be.  If I get sick I'm going to be worried that I'll be sicker a different week and go to class miserable.  Actually, class isn't the hard part when I'm sick, taking the subway to and from class is worse.

We work in a "Green Certified" building.  You can't take the stairs from one floor to the other because building management (A) didn't bother to make it so you can access the stairs from the ground floor and (B) didn't make it so that you could badge into one floor or another.  We have to badge to get into our office, so it wouldn't have been hard to program the badge readers in the stairwells.  So, we have a ton of people that take the elevator to the 2nd floor or from the 2nd to the 3rd.  That's reeeeaaall green people!

    Are we still doing this?

This just in: I don't know what excercise it is, exactly, that you're doing at the gym, because in the 15 years that I've been goin there, I've never seen it before, but whatever.  My gripe is that if it requires two benches and three pairs of dumbells, you're doing it wrong.  Also, if you're doing a set every 5 minutes in between phone calls, you're doing it wrong.  Also, they have lockers for a reason.  You don't need to carry your gym bag around on the floor with you.  Furthermore, the middle of the gym is probably not the best place to skip rope.
    In conclusion, you suck.
