  • Steffi I am with you on the baking though.  I would much prefer to have cookies, cakes, bars, and etc treats around the house that I baked myself.  I've only really gotten into cooking and baking since I got married and moved in with my husband, but yeah.  Not only does it taste better but I just feel better about it since I can control what goes into it.

Also, I totally understand your sig quote.

They aren't quite as well off as your in laws sound, but last year, DH got a brand new leather motocyle jacket, SIL got the newest iPhone, FIL got an ipad, MIL got a new car, and I got....lotion. I have gotten lotion from them for every Christmas and birthday that DH and I have been together, the exact same scent, every time. Oh, and the kicker? I'm allergic to fragrances. I had an entire cabinet full of the shut until I worked up the courage to donate it to goodwill.

  • Seesaw - that sucks. Is it possible that your in-laws have no clue what to get you? Lotion is such a default generic gift that you get people when you don't know what they really want. Do they even think to ask your H what you might like or does he offer up suggestions when the holidays come around?

  • This is a lot of talk and questions about the effin cake.

Shannyn, FI recently did an 8k, which was at the same time as a half.  He finished and then saw a giant table of medals, but they were only for the 1/2, not for him.  He was really unhappy, and I've yet to hear the end of it.

I also want to add that I love baking.  I love it so much I've often considered pastry chef as a career change.  I tried to make my own wedding cake and made a pretty darned good fondant.

But at the end of the day, there are people in my life who are worth the effort and there are those who aren't.  Your FSIL is NOT worth the effort.

FUN! I hope you get all healed up and back out there soon - I love finish lines. They make all of the BS worth it.
  • I have two 10k medals and they were SO bitchin to get at the finish line but now I'm like, okay, wtf do I do with these?  I have a few boxes of trophies and plaques and stuff from high school probably rotting in storage at my parents house.  I have a ton of journalism awards but my office isn't big enough for me to hang them  up in there.  They are fun to win, but five minutes later it's like... okay.... so... now what?

Neither one offers it. Costco offers it, but then we end up with a huge cake that she's the only one that likes it, she's on a diet, she's going to eat a tiny slice, and she'll complain about it because she doesn't eat store bought cake either.

I'm whining about the situation and it would probably be best that I drop the subject because I'm not really looking for solutions. I just wanted to vent about it.

You know, the first year, that's what I thought it was, and that she had gotten me the same scent because she assumed that I liked it. But now they know I'm a musician, that I love to cook, that I'm an organization freak....all things that give a myriad of gift giving possibilities. I am now of the belief that 5 years ago, they got an online deal on the gift lotion packs and had to buy an obscene amount to get the discount, (MIL loves to bulk buy) and they can't think of any other way to get rid of it...it's even the same brand every time!

FTR, I <em>do</em> agree with you and Jill. I also cringe when I see those "Drive Like Your Kids Live Here" signs that people put on their front lawns.

I don't know, there's just something about the idea of something hurting my nephews that makes me feel like a mean, overprotective Mama (Auntie?) Bear. And in the case of the guy who was tailing us, it's like, sure, be an asshole when I'm by myself, but do NOT rear-end me when you could potentially harm two babies. However, he shouldn't have been tailing me to begin with...

    There were issues and I'm really lucky I'm slow so I didn't run into any of those issues.  <img src="http://cdn.cl9.vanillaforums.com/downloaded/ver1.0/content/scripts/tinymce/plugins/emotions/images/smiley-laughing.gif" border="0" alt="Laughing" title="Laughing" />

I do know someone who got sick. Mr. Moose scoped out alternate routes into the hotel because he was warned about the traffic jam in the conference area.  Although, I'm pretty sure that was cleared up by the time I crossed the finish line.

I didn't mind the race course so much and I'm sad I missed the streaker and the old guy in a thong.  I remember being down around the old strip and every time I turned a corner I was all, "wtf?  Fitzgeralds AGAIN?  WHERE IS THE STRATOSPHERE?????"

Oh, I also had issues with runners leaving the Mandalay Bay crossing the course and actually ran into one who walked right out in front of me.  WTF?  I mean, it's not like I was moving that fast.  Or really hard to miss in my fuschia shirt...
