You just said exactly the point that I am trying to make. If its customary, there is no need to ASK. Also, *I* did not say it was tacky, the rules of ettiquette dictate that its tacky. These are rules that *I* did not make, but actually adhere to.  Also, i don't need to be a wedding planner to know what proper ettiquette is regarding gifts and what should be printed on invitations.
