Do you know all this from that book Waltz? Maybe I should get it too :)  Doesn't getting the timing of the sperm have something to do with the sex of the baby too? or is that a myth?
Posted by Ghoti
Ah, the Shettles Method.  Supposedly, the closer to your O date that you have sex, the more likely the baby will be a boy because the girl-making sperm can live longer and boy-making sperm are faster and can beat out the girly sperm as far as getting to the egg. IDK how much accuracy there is to to the method (think around 75%?) because based on our timing, Jewels should have been a boy.

If you were shooting for a boy (no pun intended) you would almost have to only have sex once during that whole fertil period in order to not have any leftover girl sperm from previous intercourse since the girl sperm could already be waiting for the egg by the time the boy sperm were even released. You also have to time it within a day or so of ovulation.  Most couples I know aren't willing to put all of their eggs in one basket (again, pun not intended) each month but will try to maximize their chances by making multiple attempts.

Ghoti, you should totally get the book, too.  Even if someone wasn't using it for avoiding/achieving, it's helpful for general women's health because you (general) get to know your body and what's normal for you.  So many women incorrectly self-diagnose a yeast infection or think something's wrong when they are just having normal CM.

ETA: take bleeding for example.  Most women who don't chart might assume they're having an early AF but a charter would know if that bleeding wasn't within her norm and if it happened multiple times outside of her norm, would know to go get checked out.  Charting can help diagnose problems early and I don't believe that it's far-fetched to say that it can help get early treatment for things like cervical cancer.

• They should seriously teach this stuff in health class. However, I probably find it more interesting now that I'm closer to baby making time. :)
• I'm sort of with Ghoti.  I have kids, and this entire language you are all speaking is foreign.   I'm amazed by the collective babymaking intelligence in this thread.

Birdie, I wish they taught more o this stuff in health class too.

My FI never had health class. He moved from Arkansas to Florida between 9th and 10th grade and in FL they taught health in 9th grade and in AR they taught it in 10th grade so he just completely missed it. He was asking me some questions they other day that I couldn't believe he didn't know the answers to.

Learning about the CM on the TCOYF site was actually super informative, I can generally tell what week I'm ovulating (I can also usually feel it) just by the CM, so that's cool. I tried charting my temps, but I'm terrible at remembering to do something the same time every day.
• I don't remember a thing from my health class in HS. Its been like, 10 years though.
• The big problem I have with the current movies and whatever they show for puberty is that so many of them inaccurately lead the kids to believe that every woman has a 28 day cycle and that women ovulate on the 14th day of their cycle.  Even a true 28 day woman can have a stressful month that delays ovulation leading to a longer than normal cycle.  There are just too many generalizations presented and that leads to improperly educated girls (and guys).

Weschler has a simpler version of TCOYF for teens. It focuses on just menstruation and ovulation rather than avoiding/achieving.  There is a chapter at the end about being ready for sex. I gave it to my niece after she got her first period because I didn't want her growing up misinformed.

I hate that H had no idea what the female reproductive system was like until he took his obstetrics classes for EMT.  He told me that in his "health" class at Catholic school, they separated the boys from the girls.  The boys watched a 10 minute video on voice changing and body hair, and then, he said "played paper football for the rest of the hour".  Stupid.  That is not health class.

• Yeah I think they need to have a special girl health class where they go more in depth about what is happening with their body.

Stupid parents though. They don't want to talk about sex with their kids in fear that it might encourage them and then their sweet little Suzie turns up pregnant. Oy.

Oh and this convo just convinced me to buy TCOYF!
• Anna - we're going to need to hear some of these questions.

• That sounds perfect MrsB. I didn't know they had a book for teens.

I definitely feel like health class sex ed is bogus. You don't really learn anything (at least I didn't) and are often misinformed. I totally plan on teaching my own kids about sex ed so they don't end up without a clue, even if I just have to buy them TCOYF. Plus when I finally had sex ed in 8th grade I had already had my period for 2 years, so it was basically stuff I already knew from experience because the female cycle is about all they covered.

TR-It was really mostly questions like "So how exactly does pregnancy work?" "What exactly does 'ovulation' mean?"

Like really basic stuff. I've been trying to talk to him about NFP stuff and he just doesn't even have the basic understanding of the female reproductive system needed to understand the concept. He says all guys are clueless, but I don't buy it.
• Eh, a lot of guys are clueless.  I was kind of talking to H the other day about it and I kind of figured he was a little clued in since he had an older sister that he shared a bathroom with.  I thought something about women's bodies would have come up in his household, but apparently not really.

Maybe my HS health class was above average quality. I remember having to draw and label diagrams of all the girl parts and all the boy parts from memory. I think I came away from it with a pretty good understanding of how it all worked, although I did think everyone had a 28 day cycle.
• Mr B isn't clueless..... anymore ;-)  He learned a lot from me over the last 4 years.

My health class was decent too, Anna, with the exception of the birth control talk.  Ours way mainly "These are all the methods of birth control and WHY THEY FAIL."  I still cringe when anyone brings up IUDs, because they kept telling us horror stories about the IUDs of the 1970s and 1980s that punctured the uterus if they were inserted incorrectly.  Even though I KNOW that they've come a long way and that many, many women use IUDs now that work correctly.

Abstinence-only sex ed in Catholic school, so what could I really have expected?

I swear, we all should get a commission from the TCOYF people.  How many times a day is that book recommended on this forum?  I love it.  I read it all in one sitting and started charting my next cycle.
• we were taught all the health stuff starting in grade 5.  boys and girls were seperated.  and they taught us a lot.  although, i already knew a lot.  cause my mom had had a little talk with me about it.

in grade 6, we talked about it.  boys and girls weren't seperated.

we learned a little more each year.  we watched a child birth video.  it was gross.  but, whatever.  totally a catholic school.  so he told us what birth control was out there, but he didn't tell us anything else, like how it worked or anything.

and then you go into biology and they teach you more complex stuff.  i never took bio.  but H did and he knows lots about my body.  i remember being quite surprised.  haha.

One summer when I was in college, I got my period on my first day at a new job. I called my dad and asked him if he could bring me supplies.  He showed up and handed me a shopping bag with like 10 maxi pads and 24 tampons in it.  I looked at him and said, "What the hell do you think happens to us?"  He just shrugged and left.
