So is your opinion that the medications are pointless and that the disorders don't exist? Or is it that doctors overprescribe medicine? The former makes you sound really ignorant about mental health, the latter is a debatable opinion.

Oh, brother.  If you had my job and saw depression on a daily basis, you'd change your mind about antidepressants.  I'm loath to start people on new medications of any sort, but if you haven't seen suicidality and pathological anhedonia, I'll urge you to be quiet.  Depression is no joke, and I think we undertreat and underdiagnose.
  • Sorry ladies, I knew it was controversial. Embarassed
  • I know this is an UO thread, but it just really pisses me off to see people saying they don't think anxiety disorders are real. I might grow horns and turn into a mega-bitch if I stay on this subject.

I wish they could feel for one day or one HOUR what I feel every day. I have to take deep breaths and tell myself that my fears are just in my head just to avoid a panic attack sometimes when we're in the car. I also have physical reactions to my anxiety. GAHH!!!

And the ticker is still there??

<div>Not always. There's a popular style from Davi's Bridal that runs around $150. You can get a nearly identical dress from Nordstrom for $90-ish. You just have to think outside the box, and you can get beautiful formalwear for cheap.</div>

I refer you back to my point about learning a little about life outside the Tri-State area. Bloomingdales has many dresses that are appropriate for a wedding that cost less than $400 as do other stores. There are also sales, not to mention outlets.

I really hope you're trying to be obnoxious about this issue because if not I am genuinely amazed by your ignorance of prices outside your little bubble.
  • For those who don't believe in anxiety disorders, have you ever had a panic attack?  Not, "Geez, I'm nervous, I have butterflies in my stomach" but "OMG, the walls are closing in-i'm having a heart attack- i can't breath- i am going to die."

If you haven't, then shut up.  Anxiety disorders =/= being nervous.

I'm sure your rapture ticker isn't helping your anxiety. ;)

Seriously though, it's a real issue that should not be brushed off as something that everyone deals with. Yes, everyone deals with anxiety at some point in their lives, but not everyone deals with the issues that you described.

<div>To be fair we don't have them much around here, and like I said you CAN spend more at department stores than bridal stores, but you can ALSO get better deals if you check out the clearance rack or have a coupon. </div><div>
</div><div>Different people have different opinions about what cheap is. To you $150 is the norm, but some women can't afford that for just a dress, especially if they need to consider airfare, gas, rental cars, and other travel expenses, along with any shoes they may need to buy, and if they also want to help out with any pre wedding parties. Being a good friend and being understanding of people's varying financial situations is key here. </div>

<div>I'm not saying I don't think depression or anxiety is real.  But unless you suffer from it, or see someone first hand suffering from it, you can never really understand how serious or difficult it is.  A lot of people in my family are on meds for anxiety and/or depression, and I'm one of few that aren't.  i don't think any less of them for being on it, but there are also times when I think "it really can't be that bad," simply because I haven't experienced it.  So if you haven't seen it or lived through it yourself, I can see how people form that opinion.</div>

  • Damnit, I didn't edit quick enough.

For those of you that directed questions at me about my statements when it comes to meddication, I'm not saying that I think all medication is not worthwhile. I know that some people defrinitely need it. I was just coming from the POV that I think too many people without and actual disorder or imbalance either lean on a drug as a crutch or their docs are pushing a little too hard for someone who is just stressed out to go on a med that they really don't need.

I've had plenty of first hand experience with people that both needed meds and those who were put on meds that didn't need them. So I'm not trying to be calloused about it. I get the difference. I just was too vague in my initial post.

<div>My BMs all already got their dresses and no one complained- but again, I think it's just a regional difference. In my circle, when you accept being a BM, you accept you are going to a bridal store and buying a dress. Whatever. It's an "Unpopular Opinion" and that's why it's here. </div><div>

I'm kind of wondering this too.

And Neely -- OMG.  Do you realize that depression is a clincal mental disorder that stems from a chemical imbalance of the brain?  Most people who have depression NEED their medication.  Who are you to say that someone "doesn't need" his or her pills?

  • I understand Bay, and I am really sorry my comment upset you :(

I just see anxiety in general (not depression) as more of something that can be treated by counselors and meetings, not so much with pills. But I will admit that I am undereducated about them, all I know is my experiences and the experience of a friend that is on them.
  • The rapture ticker of awesomeness is definitely still there.

Shannon, I kind of see where you are coming from but I think you're wrong. I have some anxiety issues and I resisted medication for a long time because I thought I didn't have a real problem and I was just stressed about life as an adult. Because everyone gets anxious about stuff, right?

I am really glad I finally got over it though and just let the doctor prescribe me something already. I don't feel a huge difference, but I am functioning better in day to day life. Oh, and I can actually sleep now which is a pretty big deal.

But that's my point.  How do you KNOW that they didn't need medication?  You can't know, unless you are a) that person or b) his or her doctor.
