Unpopular opinions?

Re: Unpopular opinions?

  • Emily, I personally think that athletes are overpaid, and that too much value is placed on those abilities. I also can't relate to being happy or sad if a team wins a sport. Will this team winning affect me in my day to day life? Not really. Even the physical accomplishments are not my accomplishments. I didn't in any way contribute to their success.

  • I just read through this whole thread and the only thing I can think of is that someone called Football pansy. Wtf?

    image
  • I do agree that professional athletes are highly overpaid, as are actors/rappers/musicians/etc.

The same can be said for any form of entertainment. By your definition, you should also not watch television, go to movies or listen to any music for fear of perpetuating a cycle of overpayment for something that in no way affects your life.

So... do you watch television or movies? Read popular books? Listen to music?
    image
  • I didn't say you couldn't or shouldn't watch. I said I don't understand being personally invested in the outcome. I think that is pretty clear in my post.

[QUOTE]I was unaware that asking somebody to put their glasses in the sink, their clothes in the hamper, and their cans in the recycling was asking them to do housework.  I always thought it was just asking them to clean up after themselves. Silly me.

I can get behind this statement 100%. My mother would have had a hissy fit if we didn't pick up after ourselves. I don't see why adults would think they are exempt from this either.

This is the part I don't get. I don't think you're wrong or bad, I just don't get it. Because I DO feel happy or sad whether because I feel a connection to that team (same college, same town, same country) or just because I've played sports and know how it feels to win/lose, so I just relate to them as athletes. I know that me watching TV doesn't influence how "my" team plays, and of course you're right that my life isn't affected by the outcome, but I feel like part of the community behind the teams I support.

Also I am firmly on board the Fische train regarding football.  IT IS MY RELIGION.  I bleed purple and gold y'all!  And frequently, since the Vikes can never seem to quite go all the way.  They're like a guy who has problems with premature ejaculation - you get all excited, then they blow their load right before it counts and you're all "WTF happened?  Seriously?  That's it, you're done already??"

    ooh... that's special.

Although I do think if you fully immerse yourself into a culture you tend to pick up on some slang, but two visits to another country does not = immersion. My husband is Scottish but he's picked up some American venacular, he's been here 7 years, it's to be expected.

  • There is a fine line between picking up after yourself and housework.  Does it change if you don't have a dishwasher?  Is it ok to put things in the laundry basket but not take it down to the laundry room?  It all comes down to the people involved and their understanding of what each person should do

I can't relate to that feeling, which is why I don't understand the attachment. I've never been much into sports. So, I can't relate to the emotional attachment.

No, there's not.  If you finish drinking out of a glass, you don't leave it on the living room table and go to bed.  You put it in the sink.  I will put all the dirty dishes in the sink in the dishwasher.  I will run the dishwasher.  I will handwash, dry and put away any dishes in the sink that can't go in the dishwasher.  And I will put the clean dishes away from the dishwasher.  All I ask, is that you put the goddamn glass in the goddamn sink.

  • I also don't agree that people who don't like health care or have issues with how others use unemployment or are in general conservative don't care about others.  They just have different values and believe that others are better off if they are given different incentives, or if they arn't given handouts.  Being liberal doesn't mean you care more, it just means you care in particular ways.
