Re: Ask a Knottie anything!!

  • Disaster: I've been through a few hurricanes, (knock on wood) but never anything else.  I'm terrified of natural disasters.  I study everything to learn what to do just in case something were to happen, but I'm not sure that I'd be able to think straight if I found myself in that position.

  • I've been through many, many hurricanes. Par for the course living in Florida. And along with that, we've had tornados go through our yard before or just down the street. I'm more afraid of those than hurricanes.
  • Kc--did you get my PM? I tried to send it from my phone, so I don't know if it went through.
  • Mehg...your niece is so cute.

Everyone says my niece looks like me.
This is me when I was 11ish..

Kayla is the one in the middle (they are all my nieces)

  • I remember watching the news the day the earthquake happened and seeing all the collapsed overpasses and crumbling buildings. Now, I hate stopping my car under overpasses for that very reason.

I do NOT like angry oceans. The wave at the end of The Perfect Storm scared the bejesus out of me. Ironic that I'm in the USCG, right? haha

  • Everyone: Ever dealt with a disaster? Fire, tornado, hurricane, mudslide, earthquake etc?

I lived in Miami during Katrina (I know it wasnt as bad as LA but we were out of power for 2 weeks and the house was severly damaged)

Living on the East Coast we have had our fair share of hurricanes and blizzards.  Some pretty bad ones.

  • Everyone:  If you could go back 10 years and change one thing what would it be?

I would have actually taken my SATs and then decided whether or not to join the military based on my scores for that. I just had no hope for college, but I think I could have at least gotten a grant or financial aid to help pay for my tuition, had I gotten a good score on my SATs. I think I really missed out on the college lifestyle.

  • Lots of hurricanes.  Hugo, Fran and Floyd come to mind but there are others too.  Tornados have been close to where I am probably a dozen times, but I've not had to take cover.

Nates - Yes I did, thanks lady! I'll try to shoot you a PM that day and let you know if I'm coming, if you don't hear from me, it's means I'm out.

Disaster: My parents house had a major fire in 2001, I lost nearly everything since it started in the room next to mine. All my photos from HS, my trip to Bolivia, yearbooks from HS, and all other belongings - poof! It sucked, I lived out of a duffle bag and couch hopped from friends house to friends house for a month trying not to overstay my welcome anywhere while my parents and grandma were at my aunts and sister stayed at my others sister's apartment. But on the plus size it made me a lot less materialistic. I have a fairly bare bones wardrobe, only buy new stuff when I really need it, don't hang onto or buy frivolous things and take good care of the things I have. It also made me realize should it happen again, short of photographs and some special jewelry, everything else in my house is just stuff and really does not matter. ETA: Except for the people and pets, they matter the most of course. My parents actually lost two cats in the fire, it was very sad.

Going back 10 years: I would change my major in college to finance/business instead of getting my BA in English. I loved my classes in college and I learned a lot and I'm a better thinker and writer for it. But at the end of the day that degree hasn't helped my career at all.

  • On the middle name thing...this is just confirming that Lyn is the correct spelling. It makes me laugh because people with 1 N insist they spell it right and people with 2 Ns insist they spell it right.

Best vacation and farthest I've ever been from home are one in the same. My high school graduation present was going on a trip with my photography class to London and France. Amazing.

Question: What is your favorite holiday to celebrate? How do you celebrate it?
  • Sounds good, K!  It kept not showing up for me, so I kept sending it :P.
  • Question: What is your favorite holiday to celebrate? How do you celebrate it?

I LOVE Christmas.  H's family does the night of the seven fish on Christmas eve.  My MIL is a fantastic chef and she would make an incredible dinner (usually 6-7 courses) and we would pig out.

Now that she's in NOLA, it's slightly different.  We went to my FIL's house last year and had a ton of food, just less formal than at MIL's.  This Christmas, we're hoping to be able to do it at our place.

Christmas day is usually H and I waking up and opening presents.  Then we'd spend half the day with my family, and the other half with H's family. Sometimes I work on Christmas day and sometimes I don't, it just depends on whether or not we need the extra money or not.

I'm late but here I go.

Worst injury:  My brother shoved my head into a sink corner once and split the back of my head open.

Middle name: It's Ellen. I like it a lot. I get it from my maternal grandmother who was Mary Ellen. If I have a daughter, she's going to be Amelia Ellen.

Anywhere in the world: Where I lived in Canada. I loved it, and it was perfect, and totally worth the winters.

Grandparents: My mom's dad had an emu farm. I'm pretty sure he was a mechanic too. My mom's mom was a nurse. I have no idea about anything on my dad's side of the family.

Best Vacation: California in '09. Went out for Blizzcon, stayed for a week, and hung out with 20 or so people who lived there and played WoW with us. It was so much fun.

Which parent am I like: I'm a mini clone of my mom. Here's her, me and my best friend (who 7 people asked that day if she was my sister). Personality wise, I'm much less motivated, but other than that it's uncanny.

FI drives me crazy: He can be super patronizing without realizing it. It irritates me.

How we met: We played WoW together.

What is the farthest that you have ever been from home? Florida.

Ever dealt with a disaster? Fire, tornado, hurricane, mudslide, earthquake etc? We were three miles from a tornado that killed 2 people, but we were just passing through. So I've never had to deal with the outcomes of one, no.

What is your favorite holiday to celebrate? How do you celebrate it? I don't really do much celebrating. I'll say Christmas, and with presents.

Worst injury - dislocated my kneecap.

    Middle name - Marie.

Place I would live - I'd like to stay in Minnesota for the spring/summer/part of fall, and then move to Arizona for the rest of fall and all of winter.  And then just repeat the process every year.

How we met: Noodle's friend was trying to hook him up with a friend of mine for a booty call.

Parent I'm most like: in looks, my dad.  In personality, even split.

Best vacation ever: one trip to Vegas with Noodle.  We won money, had a blast, ate really well and came home happy.

ETA: Disaster: we went through an earthquake, a tropical storm and a volcano eruption on our honeymoon.  It was pretty epic.

    Furthest from home: Costa Rica.

  • Worst injury - broken tailbone. I was snowboarding, and fell pretty hard. I couldn't sit down for 2 weeks!
Middle name - Lynn. Yeah, I like it. MY mom and bff have the same middle name as me.
If I could live anywhere, honestly, I would pick California. I love it here and I can't imagine being truly 100% happy anywhere else.
Best vacation - Our last family trip to N. Ireland when I was 10. It was really fun, and I wish that I could get back there again soon.
I don't think I'm more like one parent than the other. Now that I'm older, I can definitely see traits from both of them. This is also the farthest I've been from home.

  • Disaster - We have earthquakes and fires a lot here. We've had a few fires close to us since out house is close to the national forrest. Nothing bad enough that we've had to evacuate though thankfully. Just lots of smoke and ash.

  • My favorite holiday is Halloween.  We go up to Salem and walk around and do all the witch stuff.  Plus, the fall in New England is fuckn amazing.

I've never been thru any major disasters, unless you would count the snow that shut down so many cities over the past two winters. I have been thru a pretty nasty flood that took out my then boyfriends entire downstairs of his parents house.

If I could go back ten years I would finish college the first go round, which means I would have been working in my field for about 6 years now instead of trying to finish college now. I would also have avoided a few people I thought were my friends that turned out to be life sucking assholes.

Question- What was your dream job when you were younger. Whether its 6 or 16 yrs old, what did you want to be?

I wanted to be a paranormal investigator, and a psychologist when I was about 6, and it stuck with me through college. I still want to be both. Of course when I was 6 it was only called a ghost hunter, there was no fancy name for it back then.

Eta: my favorite holiday is and always has been Halloween. I dress up every year and go out.

fave holiday is for sure christmas, its my birthday which has always been over looked, so i started putting all of my energy into making christmas awesome to compensate. it is literally just the happiest time of year.
  • When I was in elementary school I wanted to be a lawyer. I loved arguing with people and was pretty good at it. I thought that was all a lawyer did.
  • Dream Job: I've always wanted to be a cartoonist. Or a stand-up comic.

  • This thread is fun to read :)

    Worst injury: broken foot, ugh.

Middle name: Rae. It's always fit me, I like it, it fits with my first.  And woot MilkDuds! :)

Anywhere in the world: Annecy France

Grandparents:   School principal and state office secretary, helicopter pilot and gift shop owner.

Best Vacation:  Tough one. France and the San Juan islands of NW Washington rank up there. But def the honeymoon at the Oregon coast was so relaxing knowing we had all week and we rented a big house all to ourselves. Perfect weather. I want to be there right now talking about it!

Which parent am I like: My mom in looks, my dad in personality. That's why it's so annoying to be compared to my mom, hehe.

    FI drives me crazy:

    How we met: Through friends

What is the farthest that you have ever been from home? France

Ever dealt with a disaster? in OR, we have floods, and I definitely lived through the flood of 96, which was really intense in the valley here.

The alleys were flowing rivers and it was all sewage. Children with no parental supervision would just be swimming in the streets all day, like a giant swimming pool, it was sickening. Worse was all the news channels just filming them from helicopter and not telling them to get out! Barf! A lot of my friends lost anything in their basements and the first floor, which of course, was always old family photos :(

And a few very small rumbling Earthquakes, but I always sleep through them, lol.

fave holiday? Buddha's birthday dinner, which I celebrate kinda like Christmas, with presents and art, I celebrate it in May, comin' up, yay.

Growing up I always have loved Halloween, still do, I HAVE to dress up.

  • Question- What was your dream job when you were younger. Whether its 6 or 16 yrs old, what did you want to be?

I've always wanted to be an author. I never really planned for anything else, which is why it took so long for me to get a "real" job.

i wanted to be an interior designer - went so far as to take it 1st year and ended up hating it! dropped out hah, so much for dreams!
  • How H and I met:
I was 18 in a bar at college.  He was on shore leave from the Navy.  I was very drunk.  We danced all night.  I puked on his feet.  For some reason he found this attractive.

K, I know we all just want healthy kids (if we want them) but do you think you would be a better parent for a girl or a boy?
Hmmmm I'm not sure.  I think I'd be okay with either.  I do think H will go into helicopter mode if we have a girl.  I'll be lucky if she'd get through kindergarten without him wrapping her in bubble wrap and following her everywhere.  H is a really good guy.  Honestly since we want 4 kids I'd really like one of each.

Which parent are you the most like?
I'm a nice mixture of both of my parents.  I certainly have my Dad's humor and ability to be vocal.  I have my Mom's sense of family, responsibility, and nurturing aspects.  What really creeps me out when I think about it is how alike my Dad and H are.
  • Worst injury - Broken leg, I was hit by a car at the age of 7. I had a body cast and was in a wheel chair for months.
Middle name - My Middle name is Dawn, as close as they could get to my dad's name, Don. And my neice is named after me, Aubrey Dawn.

Place I would live - Kauai, in a heartbeat.

How we met: Match.com, he wasnt one of my matches he just popped up in a chat room , a week later he was driving to meet at TGIF's the rest is history.

Parent I'm most like: I look like my Dad, but I act like my Mom

Best vacation ever: Wow, thats hard, Hawaii, Ireland, Paris, Napa, SC. I've had to many to pick.

    Disaster: None really.
Furthest from home: Paris, or Ireland.
