Had I been a boy, I would've been 'Angelo'. No joke.
I would have been Jacob Thomas
@beethery and emmaaa, if you ladies had numbers in your SN, we might consider adding your names to our baby name short list... ;)

Honestly, though, I don't think either of those real names sound too bad.

  • I know someone who named her son "Chase Danger Car"* I feel so bad for him, so many ways to get teased.

    - Car, Chase
    - Chase D Car

And the stupidity of being able to say "my middle name is danger"

*Note I did purposefully spell last name wrong, but phonetically.

    Wow. Poor kid.

  • Also: I am so so jealous of all of you who know what you would have been if you'd been a boy. My parents knew I was going to be a girl super early, so boy names weren't ever even bandied about. :(

I THINK I would have been a Luke if I was a boy, because I know it was my mom's favorite boy name, but I don't know for sure. I know their girl choice was Danielle though, and they changed their minds when they saw me. I'm pretty glad I'm not a Danielle (nothing against the name, it's just not me).

After 2 girls they did have a boy, and realized he didn't look like a Luke so they changed that one too. Be careful about getting your heart too set on a name before the kid is birthed!

That's okay. I went 6 days without a name because Grandma put the kabosh on the girl's name my parent's picked out. I'm not exactly sure what she threatened, but it had something to do with calling me "Cookie" or "Candy." (The original name ended up going to my sister, and it suits her better anyway).

I would have been "Sean" which is funny because I hate that name. My brother would have been "Mary Lou" after my grandmother.
  • What really annoys me now with all the yoonique spellings, is that my commonly spelled name suddenly becomes hard to spell.

My name is Andrea. Feminine of Andrew. Pretty darn straight forward.

    I've gotten
    Andriea
    Andrya
    Andria
    Andreya
    Ondrea
    Andreah

Like come on! It's not the most popular name, peaked in the late 70's early 80's (i'm a mid 80's baby) and even then didn't crack the top 30. But its EASY TO SPELL.

I mostly get it spelled wrong by teens, so I guess they are more used to names being spelled wrong so they assume.

    Parents staph it! just staph!

I was originally supposed to be Mary Anna but my mom said I looked more like an Emma.

I was supposed to be a Jessica. I'm really glad I'm not. It just wouldn't suit me at all.

If I had been a boy, I would've been named Ben.

My grandmother wanted my first name to be Danielle so bad!  She gave my mom a hard time about it for a long time.

  • Supposedy I would have been Brett had I been a boy.  My father's mother was too excited about that because her cousin was George Brett, the baseball player.  So I don't think my mother would have made my grandmother that happy anyway.

My FI was originally named Christopher, but then his grandmother suggested changing his name to Christian, so they did.

Judging by how long it took me to decide on my dog's name, I shouldn't be responsible for naming a human.  Can't let FI take the reins either though, since he is pretty set on Thor.

Sophie went her entire life usually being the only Sophie. Now go out the mall "Sophie! Sophie! Sophia get your ass back here!"....it's awesome. For me. For her it's going "What?" and then realizing not her but rather the small child running off.

I got asked once, by an adult, if my parents named me after Fiona from Shrek. Shrek came out in 2001. I was born in 1986. I don't think my parents are time travelers...
The bolded is me. I didn't know any other Emma's when I was younger. Now, every time I'm out I hear it multiple times.

Why?! That poor woman, she has probably has to constantly correct people on how to spell her name.

I dislike odd spellings.... I've met a baby girl named "Izzabella" and wondered what drugs the parents were taking when they decided on that spelling (apparently mom WAS on drugs). BM has a daughter that is Madeline but spelled Madilin. The spelling looks like Penicilin to me and I feel like such a shitty friend when I think about that. I find it interesting that I hate alternative spellings because growing up I experimented with different spellings of my own name. I love the name Amy/Aimee but I worry that if I use Aimee (the French version) people will think I'm trying to be "yoonique". I would just go with Amy.

YES! DH's family is French-Canadian so our last name is very French. He likes all the French spelled names like Marc & Luc but I won't let him because people here will just think we spelled it wrong.
I actually love Marc spelled that way. Usually I write Marc and have someone correct me "No it's with a K". I don't count it as a yoonique spelling. Marcus is not with K after all.

Don't feel bad for her; she's a horrible person.

Ditto. Foreign spellings =/= special snowflake spellings. Marc and Mark is like Juliet and Juliette - neither are unique/weird spellings, just different.

I'm actually the opposite. I'm a Alex and there were like 20 Alexs in my class alone in HS, let alone the other years. If someone yelled my name, I usually didn't respond unless I recognized the voice.

  • I loved looking at the name by year thing, I did it for 50 years. My name peaked in 83 but isn't that popular now. I saw Jacob is the number one boy name for like the last 15 years in a row. Wouldn't you choose not to name your kid that if it was becoming that popular?? There is going to be a million of them
Nope, wouldn't stop me. And there's actually a very strong likelihood we'll name a son Jacob, because it's a family name. It has always been and will always be popular because it's a classic... it goes back to Biblical times, is popular in Christian and Jewish families, in my own ancestry it goes back to the 1600s, and currently there are 3 Jakes in my family of different ages. Huge difference between that and being one of 6 Braydens but the minute you hear of a Brayden you can guess within about 3 years what year he was born because it was a blip on the radar.
I know a 32 year old Braydon. I honestly don't have a problem with Aiden, but all the other made up names that rhyme are way too popular, and I don't know why.

It seems like in this thread no matter what your name is people are going to have a problem with it. It's too popular, it's too unique, it's too old, it's made up. It's not spelled correctly.Whatever, people can name  their kids what they want.

Everyone can have their personal opinions obviously (I hate the name Amber, no rational reason, I just don't like it). I also don't like Princess or  Neveah. How did Neveah ever get to be a name?
Because Aiden (or Aidan) isn't a made up name. I hear people say that a lot.
It's Irish, and has been around for hundreds of years. I had a great uncle Aidan. A friend named Aiden, in his early 60s now. There's a Saint Aidan. Aidan Quinn, the actor. Aidan McCarthy, famous World War II veteran.
It's really popular now, and overused, but definitely not "made up."
Sorry if I wasn't clear. I know Aiden isn't made up, but the other names that rhyme with it are.

  • I know people IRL who have named their babies:
    Hermoine
    Clara
    Milo

I also hate the trendy Z names like Zander and Zara. (No offense to anyone who chose those; they're just not my thing)

And I hate any name that just becomes hugely popular so there's 12 kids in every first grade class with the same name: Ella, Aiden, June (as a middle name usually), Addison, and so on. Again, no offense. Just not my thing.
LOL! FI and I totally have Claire/Clara on our short list for future baby names
    We do too!!!!

Yes. I always instinctively turn my head and answer. I always feel like I have done something wrong.

I think someone touched on this, but I think last names should be taken into account when naming your child.

Recently I helped with scholarship mailings my company sends to every employee who has high school aged children. Some of those names were interesting.

Summer and Autumn are fine names. Just not when your last name is Rain.

    ETA: They are twins.
