I agree that's just as shitty..... but that's the point that that type of behavior isn't acceptable so neither is being disrespectful towards religious beliefs just because you do not believe in them.

Sadly the parents have to sign a permission slip for sex ed. ALOT of kids get left out because the parents didn't agree.

    Posted by aprovencher21
Like I said several times in that thread, I don't know that kosher or halal slaughter are more cruel or less humane than conventional methods. I just don't think that someone's religious traditions should exempt them from being held to the same standards to which everyone else must abide.

In other words: if a country determines that animals should be rendered unconscious before being slaughtered because it is more humane and spares the animal unecessary pain and emotional distress, then I think that law should be applied equally, without regards to its impact on specific religious practices.

On a related note: I often feel that people respond to the argument they think someone should be making based on broader stereotypes, rather than the argument that is actually being made. I felt this several times in the slaughter thread, and I think Blue gets it a lot too.

For me it was less about the actual issue and more about how you say things regarding religion. I get that you are an atheist and I respect your beliefs but the way you phrase your sentences about religious people often come out really rude.

As for the slaughter issue I do think religions should be given a pass in many respects and then not in others. The articles I read on this issue were about a certain subsect of slaughter houses using dull blades so the throat cutting was prolonged, painful and terrifying. Obviously this should be outlawed and condemned. But the whole stunning issue v. a quick throat cut seems less about animal rights and significantly more about punishing religious freedom.

I see what you're saying here and kind of agree, but I think if this were true, it would open a lot of other doors relating to religion/laws. Like if schools are making students get vaccines, then ALL students should have to get vaccines and not be exempt for religious reasons.

Ugh. That is so awkward. We have a student at the college that I worked at who got pregnant her senior year. She came from a very sheltered background. Mom is convinced that she got pregnant from a toilet seat because her daughter would never do "that". The crazy thing is that she actually convinced her daughter that was what happened, even though her daughter must have known that was not what happened. She was also 23 weeks along before she "knew" she was pregnant (once again, how did she not know?). The good news is that the girl is still in school working towards a degree while dad's family takes care of the baby. This gets me too - if she got pregly off a toilet seat, how did they know who the dad was? Did Dad admit to jizzing on a toilet seat? The whole story was nuts. Sweet kid, though. She still to this day knows nothing about reproduction.

No, no. I agree with you, Mery. I value our right to religious freedom -- including our right to freedom from religion, if we so choose. It's just that I very much object to legislating based on religious beliefs. In my mind, this includes legislating around religion as well (i.e., making exceptions for certain groups of people based on their professed beliefs).

Yes I referenced this when discussing the dull blade part.
In Response to Re: AYG : I see what you're saying here and kind of agree, but I think if this were true, it would open a lot of other doors relating to religion/laws. Like if schools are making students get vaccines, then ALL students should have to get vaccines and not be exempt for religious reasons.

But, see, I'd support this. Your right to religious freedom shouldn't expose my hypothetical future children to dangerous and even deadly viruses because you feel you should be exempted from a requirement because it is contrary to your religion.

    eta: General you, obviously. :)

See I'd support the right for parents to not vaccinate their children due to religious beliefs. I'd also support the interpretation of tort law to let me sue the crap out of the parents and the school if something happened (even minor) to my children.

I don't like big government and I really don't like when people start getting forced to do things.
In Response to Re: AYG : Oh my. That's just awfully naive and strange for the mother to believe that. I couldn't imagine going home and telling my parents I got pregnant off a toilet seat. My father would have laughed his ass off at my stupidity.

From what I understand, it was Mom's idea, and the girl just went along with it! It is a really sad story - Mom died a few months later, the girl's dad is out of the picture, so now the baby's dad's family cares for teh baby in a different state. I have to say how much I admire the girl for staying in school in a very tough degree program and trying to do the right thing for her baby.
