• Oh. I don't eat collard greens. Nope. I also don't eat peaches. Well, I like canned peaches. And fresh peaches in ice cream. But no greens, except on New Year's Day when you have to. Although they're slowly growing on me. I JUST started eating cornbread. What more do you want from me?!
In Response to Re: Mosque in NYC : Isn't that generalizing a whole group of people, just by the acts of some? Not getting how it's okay to generalize NYers, but not Muslim. For the record, I am from NJ and my town had the highest amount of people lost in 9/11 outside of NYC. It was a tragedy that I watched unfold in front of me, I had a friend's mom crumble into my arms as she was at church praying for her husband's return that never happened. It was and remains a terrible act, but we cannot take what certain people did and try to ban everyone else who shares the same religion.<strong> True New Yorkers would say "build it, see what we care"</strong>- the bigger argument for NYers is Mets/Yankees or Jets/Giants, let's get back to that please...
Posted by akmackay
Yes, I agree with that. My mom's family is from NY and after 9/11 I sent a letter to my Grandma asking her what her opinion was on the whole thing. She quoted "My girl's a corker, She's a New Yorker" and then said that the people from her state were nothing if not resilient. They had been through bad times before and come out on the other side and they would again.

I think it's utter bullshit to say that anyone outside of NYC can have as strong an opinion on the events of that day and its aftermath. It touched ALL of us and the current debate proves that.

I, for one, stand by the Constitutional right to freedom of religion and would never oppose the building of a center of religion or religious tolerance. I might side-eye a KKK meeting house in the middle of the Castro District but, whatever, it's their right.

Oh yeah?  Well, MY gay black friend is a TEXAN.  And a liberal atheist (although for most of our friendship he was acutally conservative Christian.  Then he grew up and got the hell out of Beaumont).

His first name is Prince and his last name is just one letter off from the first name of an actual prince.  He now goes by "Sullivan."  When we reconnected via Facebook, I started to ask him why he changed his name, and he sent me a virtual facepalm.
In Response to Re: Mosque in NYC : You know, where I grew up, there are two churches across the street from each other.  I always thought that was strange.  And parking on Sundays was a disaster. I don't see what the point is of building two additional churches there.  I'm sure that other religions are already adequately served by other churches they already have.  Especially considering my understanding is that attendance at religious services tends to be decreasing rather than increasing, no?

It's the symbolism of the three Abrahamic faiths living side by side - and I said build a church and a synagogue next to the islamic center, not two churches.

• Late to the discussion, but...I was having a discussion with someone on Facebook about the "mosque at Ground Zero."

This was his response: Let's build an "SS learning and remembrance center" mere feet away from the entrance to Auschwitz, simply because it is, and should be allowed by law. I beleive not all SS members agreed with the extermination of Jews, so the center is ok r...ight,,,,, Rediculous!!! Just because muslims have AMERICAN given rights to be on that ground does not mean they should be. I'm just sayin there is a hidden agenda and hidden message to radical muslims the imam is trying to give, and the situation will not ever be good if the mosque is allowed to be there.

Anyone know what SS stands for? I really have no idea and don't even know how to start.  I think it is somehow comparing Muslims to Nazis? Which is a first for me.

SS = Schutzstaffel, or Protection/Shield Squadron, a Nazi police/paramilitary organization.

The comparison is ridiculous & only works if all Muslims are terrorists.  You can't really differentiate between SS and Nazis.  SS ran Auschwitz and other concentration camps.  So I would agree with that FB guy, but only if people were trying to establish a terrorist training camp two blocks from the WTC or a museum in honor of the heroic terrorists who sacrificed their lives for Allah.   Then the SS memorial by Auschwitz would be comparable.  But non-radical muslims are building a fricking community center.  In no way does that honor or celebrate those who committed the atrocious crimes on 9-11.
• Thanks, Fangs.  I knew it was a ridiculous comparison considering it had to do with Nazis, but I was sure on the specifics of what "SS" meant.

• If you think that putting up a mosque, 600 ft. from ground zero, and have the inauguration on the anniversary of 9/11/11 is immoral, inhuman and a complete lack of respect for the memories of all that perished there, and that politicians are doing a grave injustice to the fallen heroes, their families and all the people of New York... City, THEN PLEASE COPY AND PASTE THIS TO YOUR WALL
You don't have people copying and re-posting this?
And I still am confused about the "anniversary of 9/11/11" means. That date hasn't happened yet??

• Nope. I don't. 9/11/11 is the ten year Ann. Didn't it happen in 01?
