Tide:  My dog took the canine good citizen test because I wanted to get her into search and rescue.  She failed because she was overly friendly to strangers and other dogs.  She couldnt just sit and avoid dogs and people.  Her tail started wagging and she climbed up on the "stranger" and started licking him.  She also got out of her sit to go play with the other dog. It was a sad day, lol.  She failed because she was too friendly.

The only way that Trooper passed was with a "watch me" command.  When he gets distracted, I say "watch me" and hold a treat up to my forehead (well, to train him I did.)  Works like a charm now.  Especially with people trying to feed him chips, grrr.

I understand kids wanting to pet the dog, but adults?  It's not like he was just lying around.  He was on the flight floor actively searching bags.  Working dog protocol aside, why would anyone reach out to pet a dog that you don't know.

This. Katie doesn't do strangers and anytime we are out walking people want to come over and pet her. I always politely tell her no but they argue, going "But she looks so sweet". Yes, yes she does, until you walk over here and she thinks you are threatening me and tries to eat you!

I'm an agriculture specialist for Customs and Border Protection.  Trooper is a beagle, and he's trained to detect fruits, vegetables, plants and meats in passenger baggage.
In Response to Re: Unpopular Opinions : That's super cool.  I've seen beagles doing that.  Mine (beagles) would try to eat whatever they found even if it was fruit.  It always surprises me that there are beagles out there that can do that without eating what they find.  How often do you find stuff?  Every day?  Or is it rare?  What's the weirdest/most interesting/grossest thing Trooper has ever found?
    Posted by jcbsjr
For the most part, he doesn't actually see the food in the bag.  He smells it through the luggage, and either the passenger admits that they have food or I would do an inspection and find the food, but not take it out in front of him.  He is still working on posing nicely among the food for pictures when there is beef involved.

We find stuff on every flight, every day.  Some of it's ok, some of it's not.  In the last 6 days that he's worked, we've found 42 lbs of prohibited food items.  That doesn't include the stuff that he finds that is enterable.

As far as weird stuff, we've only been on the job for a few months, and we don't have a huge variety of flights right now, so most of the stuff that he's gotten has been pretty routine.  He's originally trained on 5 odors, but he's now intercepted over 20 different items that he wasn't trained on.  I would say that in my time here, the weirdest thing that I've found was probably smoked bats out of africa.
Oooh.  This turned into dog talk.  Good, because I have a vent. WTF is up with people thinking it's ok to pet a working dog?  I just had 5 people on the last flight try to reach down to pet Trooper, and one guy actually try to give him a dorito!  I was nice about it for the first month, "Please don't pet him.  He's working. "  It's now turned into, "Don't pet him.  He's working."  I think that soon it's going to be, "WTF is wrong with you?  Would you walk up to a stranger on the street and attempt to pet their dog without asking?"   God, I hate stupid people.
    Posted by tidetravel
God I hate people like that. I also hate people who let their kids run up to any animal in public to pet it. You don't know those freakin people or their damn dog! WTF is wrong with you? When your darling little fucker gets his hand bitten off one day, that's all on you, dumbass.

I'm also not a huge fan of dogs in public who are not service dogs. Parks, beaches, etc. are fine, but festivals and places where there are tons of people are not ok with me, and I judge. I'm glad Foofie likes people and running in crowds and sniffing asses all day. Again, I don't know you or your dog, and I don't feel like tripping over it while I look at glass beads at a street festival. Take the damn thing home and stop being such an AW.

If only that were legally true. Instead the dog is normally place in quarrantine and the owner fined for having an aggressive animal. One of my friends was walking her dog, saw a 20 year old and crossed the road. He crossed over so she told him to please back away from her dog. He was like "oh no it's fine" and went to pet her. She bit (not hard enough to break the skin even) and he sued my friend and won.

  • Re: kid's sports

My brother always played sports when he was little and they always kept score. However, a lot of the coaches were hellbent on winning and took it too far. For example, my brother was a great hitter and everyone knew it. So when he went up to bat, the other coach told the pitcher to walk him every.single.time. He never got a chance to hit because the coaches were too afraid to let him. Another kid was a great pitcher and eventually they found out the kids were being told to purposely step in front of the ball so they would be walked. That to me is extremely poor sportsmanship and teaches the kids the same thing.

And Blue, Whisky would never attack you. He loves you. And his claws are always trimmed so he can't scratch anyway.
  • I have a popluar opinion--I think Trooper stories are fascinating.  It takes so much (training and mentally--can you say mentally for a dog?) to be a service/working dog.

My unpopular opinion is that I love my small dog :P.  He is not yappy, but I don't know if that's due to me or his general nature.  He has a very deep, throaty, Beagle bark/howl, but he's not a barker.

    He loves you guys, too.

I mean in the karmic sense. Like, when your kid with one hand kicks another kid's teeth out and you go over to help and the hurt kid uses what teeth are left to bite theshit out of you, you should think back to that dog. :) Or something like that.

Tide, how did you get into your line of work, if you don't mind me asking?

I've discovered over the years that very few people have a straight path to the job they are working and I love hearing the stories of how people got to where they are.

I stumbled into it.  When I was in HS, I worked as a stablehand at the barn that we boarded our horses.  That led to me getting a job as a groom at a horse race track, for a couple of years.  After that, I got a job as an animal caretaker with USDA, taking care of animals in their Animal Parasitology Research Unit.  I found an announcement for "agriculture specialist" with CBP, and thought, hmmm...  I work for the department of AGRICULTURE.  Let's apply and see what happens.

I accepted the AS position a little over 5 years ago.  I've been pushing and pushing to get an ag dog here, but since we're such a small port, they were never able to justify getting one, since the program is so small (there's only a couple hundred agriculture teams in the country.)  Finally, last year, they opened up a position for Ag K9 officer here.  It was offered to me, and I took it.  I love it so much, although, now that I'm pregnant, I'm not sure if I'll be able to keep the dog.

I'm sooooorry! If it helps, I usually wait until after "meeting" the dog before I decide if I hate it specifically. I just happen to not like a lot of small ones...
  • I see a working beagle everytime i fly through Halifax.  He/She hops all over the luggage and it's awesome.

I am a dog lover, but I am fascinated by people who bring their dogs everywhere.

I once saw a Golden retriever on the housewares floor at Bloomingdales!  Near the CHINA!  And someone wheeling two Shelties in shopping cart at a Bed Bath and Beyond.  I asked him what aisle he got them on.
