Re: FFF

  • I think in her bio she says she is paying for her bridal party, and if anyone else wants to join it is X amount of dollars.

[QUOTE]My parents are Southern Baptist and we converted the Methodist. My parents only bother us because they think we need the community feeling that comes with belonging to a church. And honestly, we agree with them. But we're lazy and like our sleep. One of these days we will get around to finding a church home.

I feel the same way. My H was raised Catholic. I was raised Presbyterian - my mom was, but my dad was a non-practicing Catholic. Eventually H and I want to raise our kids in a church environment, but we'll likely end up church shopping and agreeing on a denomination and congregation we can both live with. But since kids aren't quite on the radar yet, it's a non-issue at this point. No reason to join a church yet.

  • I just got back from the gym.

Imp - I am so sorry to hear that. Was it mandysmear that got laid off this week, too.
  • I need to add a flame:  I flame my boss for not letting me know if I can leave at 3.  It is now 3:02.  This silent treatment is NOT COOL.

  • I'm still kind of mad I have to pay $15 to go to my friend's b-day party. I confess I'd rather spend the money on Catalina tomorrow.

  • Thanks Daff. We'll figure it out. Someday :)
  • Birdie, did you see my suggestion?  Not trying to nag, but this thing IS 8 pages long...lol.

  • Imp -- I'm catching up with my reading.  I'm sorry about your job.
  • Was it the midwives one?? I did. I've thought about that option. We just haven't found the right person yet. :)
  • That's the one :)  We got lucky with her.  Otherwise I don't know what we would have done.  I was pretty against someone from a church marrying us, because of the kind of thing that happened to Any.

[QUOTE]I flame my work for having actual WORK for me to do today so I could only read FFF. But I have a moment now, so... I'm somewhere in the middle of Buddhism/Paganism. I'm a Buddhagan. And I don't sacrifice animals, FWIW. We're probably going to raise our kids attending a Unitarian Church because I really like the fellowship and community aspects, and in most UU churches I've attended no one cares what you do/do not believe in. So long as you're not a serial puppy kicker.

<div>I was raised Catholic, but refused to be confirmed and went more of the Buddhist route.  FI was raised in Baptist and Pentecostal churches and doesn't have anything nice to say about either.  We joined a UU church and LOVE it.  The minister is a woman who has been a practicing Buddhist for years.  She's awesome, and she's going to perform our ceremony.</div><div>
</div><div>Birdie, have you checked with a UU church?  There's one in Evansville.  Even if you don't want to get married inside the church itself, the minsters will usually travel an perform the ceremony wherever you want.  <a href="http://www.uuevansville.org" rel='nofollow'>www.uuevansville.org</a></div>
  • I've thought about it special. It's something I might talk to FI about.

[QUOTE]I flame all of craigslist pet owners for saying "small rehoming fee" on ads for dogs that FI and I would potentially like to adopt. Once emailed, they say they want $300+ and I do not consider this a small rehoming fee.  <strong>I also flame the ones who buy a puppy and get rid of it 3 months later, because they didn't research how much time, money and patience it takes to raise a puppy.</strong>

  • I can't even go on Craigslist because it makes me so mad.  I love the ads requesting male dogs to breed with a female and then an hourly charge.  Thanks for adding to the pet overpopulation problem!!!!!!!!

  • Sketti- Have you checked out your city and/or county shelters?  Usually they cost less than the local rescues because local pet licenses go towards paying for the overhead.  They're usually happy to let you adopt without much paperwork because they are so overcrowded.

Disclaimer: I am not endorsing irresponsible pet ownership.  I support rescue organizations.  But I know that sometimes the hurdles that some rescues expect people to clear feel ridiculous.  I was turned away from rescue organizations because I work too many hours.  My dog, who was saved from the high-kill shelter, prefers to be alive, even if I occasionally am away from the house for 11hours (she has a porch potty and doggie door).

[QUOTE]I agree pink, it's very frustrating. I have posted under the wanted section about how I have a great and loving family and we're searching for a dog that needs a new home, etc. and it always gets flagged. I love how craigslist can basically solicit sex, and theres pictures under the personals of every body part you can think of, but it's "wrong" for me to want to give a dog a home. I've also tried shelters but I disagree with a "non-profit" organization forcing you to "donate" $300 and also make you fill out something that looks like a job application for a security clearance job.

As someone who has volunteered for several different rescue organizations, I find your use of quotation marks offensive. A $300 adoption fee doesn't even begin to offset the costs involved in rescuing and rehoming unwanted animals.  Sure, some dogs and cats can be turned around -- from intake to adoption -- in a relatively short amount of time and therefore without incurring a lot of expenses.  But others can languish in the system for months, if not years, and many require additional expenditures in the form of surgeries, behavioral therapy, etc.

A rescue's overhead includes food; veterinary care (including the spay/neuter surgery and shots); boarding; obedience training; pet supplies like kennels, toys, collars, leashes, etc.; and administrative expenses, such as those involved in maintaining a website, transporting animals, participating in events and the like.  Rescue is a money-losing venture.  Volunteers do it out of love for the animals, not in the hopes of turning a profit.  Believe me, there is no profit to be had.

Not to mention the $300 is peanuts compared to what you spend on a pet over the course of its lifetime.
