Re: Confessions

  • My confession?  I've spent pretty much my whole life not wearing any make-up, lol.  I know that makes me such an oddball.

It's mostly pure laziness.  Especially since make-up is typically done in the morning.  I am not a morning person.  I'd rather have the extra sleep.

From my teens to 20s, I wore lipstick almost every day and mascara about half the time.  That was it.  Now, I don't even usually do that.

I know, I know.  I should at least do skincare.  I have periods of time where I've been good about it.  But then I fall off the wagon and it is hard to get back in the habit for something I don't really like spending the time to do.

My one saving grace is I was blessed with great skin by my mom and grandma.  My skin has always been clear, smooth, and even-colored.  Sure, it looks a little better with foundation.  But it's not enough of a difference to warrant waking up 5 minutes earlier, lol.

I am blessed with good skin(most people think I am younger than my age) and a mom (and aunts) who pounded good skincare into me as a teenager/young adult. They also wore makeup so it became second nature to me - don't know if it had anything to do with being raised in the south.  I never went to high school without some makeup on my face.
  • I've never been to a Sephora.

And you have peaked my curiosity.
Not interested, not near you, etc?

    Yes and probably.

I'm sure there's at least a couple around here. But I wear makeup out of necessity. To me, makeup is like toilet paper. Not exciting or fun to shop for, use the same shit every day. A necessary daily need. I've never wanted to get in my car and drive to a makeup store, unless it was an absolute necessity and even then I avoid going to Ulta. I've been told Sephora is bigger and more uncomfortable than Ulta.

We don't have Ulta, so I'm not sure on that.

If you - or anyone who doesn't frequent makeup places - opt to ever go, I would suggest taking someone who's more familiar with the store. It is 100% overwhelming even to myself sometimes.
  • I get so overwhelmed at Ulta if I'm looking and not on a mission knowing what I want.

I will say I do like the store but if I ever wanted to switch foundations I'd need to show up without a kid and plenty of time on my hands.
  • I do too, Banana.

I didn't wear any makeup for a long time to see if it would help my skin. Going into an Ulta with horrible skin, no makeup, a messy bun (not the cute kind) and old clothes really helps with their perfectly made up employees leaving you alone. Sometimes they're nice and responsive to my low maintenance makeup and sometimes they're appalled that I don't highlight.

I think I'll have to go to Ulta tomorrow to have them do a foundation match. I'm not sure I got the correct liquid bareminerals color. Ugh.

MKD, I believe Ulta is similar to Sephora - huge makeup, skincare, fragrance and hair store.

Ulta also has a salon and they carry drugstore make-up and hair brands along with the high-end stuff.  The stores are all a lot bigger with more selection of everything than Sephora.

    Damn, we need Ulta lol
  • @MissKittyDanger - Ulta ships to Canada, but no stores. I did hear a rumour that they were going to do a couple of pop up stores in the GTA.

I’m in the rarely-wear-make up camp too.  My sister did my make up for my prom, a MUA for my wedding and a few weddings I’ve been a BM in, and I wore mascara and lip gloss to a big family party last year.  Otherwise it’s my daily moisturizer, lip balm, and I exfoliate once a week.  I have good skin and I’m very low maintenance by nature.  And I have absolutely no idea what I’m doing.

I heard that rumour too. I'm weird, I like being in stores when it comes to makeup and skincare lol
  • I've been a Bare Minerals wearer for about 9 years.  I just turned 38 at midnight so I'm kind of on the fence about when I may need to shift to different formulations and something that helps my skin, fine lines, etc.  I do like it so far but just wonder if something is possibly better.

And while I have no more siggy pics I'm SUUUUUUPER pale.   So the problem I have is buying online for the first time.   I need to try out so I don't look like I'm dipped in Trump's Cheeto dust.

Thus far I cleanse with a Perfectly Posh cleanser and use their Defiant line on my eyes morning and night.   I use their defiant moisturizer at night and Aveeno w/ SPF daily.

I apply primer (right now Bare Minerals but I bought a SuperGoop primer w/ SPF that should be here today) and then use Bare Minerals foundation and setting powder.   I also use UD eyeshadow primer and their Naked Smoky palette.   I've liked the L'Oreal gel eyeliner but would go for something more expensive if it stayed and recently went with the Better Than Sex mascara which is good but.....I'm not sure what kind of sex it's supposed to be better than.

I've heard good things about CC creams.   Does anyone know if you can write to a company and ask for just one application sample?  I hate using them in stores because I hate tubes that have been applied a million times but again, the palest shade is still usually too orange for me.     I would LOVE to find a CC cream that works with my skin for the summer months - especially when I'm  at the beach or on the boat and want to look good / cute but also do not want to have on a full face.

  • @banana468 :O! Happy birthday!!!
    I'm pale also, so I feel your struggle. {If you ever want to stray from BareMinerals, let me know I can give you some brand suggestions :) }

This is the one bonus about Sephora. They recently - ok maybe a year or 2 ago? - got this Skin IQ that can help find the colour that works for you.

Btw, why a CC cream? Is it the light weight portion about it or something else?

It's more that in the summer I want something lightweight that doesn't take a lot of effort to apply but that leaves me with something better than my splotchy skin.    We're talking something that can work when I may go in but not be submerged in water and or be splashed when on the boat.   Seems silly to go through the full routine for sporty activities but I'd also like to not look like I'm a tired mom who routinely sleeps poorly and has pale skin and rosacea.

  • @banana468 I'd definitely say contact the company and see if they have it. If nothing else maybe you can get a coupon or something

    Look at BB cream .... I'm gonna be looking into it to make sure my go-to brand isn't discontinued but I love Benefit Bigger Than BB Cream {liquid to powder} and good coverage for being light. {also stays when sweaty - I've used it for 4yrs}

Also a tinted moisturizer would work. Nars has a good one, but if you have a foundation you like - mix small amount of that with foundation for your own tinted moisturizer.
Drug store brands - New York Colour has a good one and so does Maybelline. I know L'Oreal has one but haven't tried it yet. Elf may also, but I'm not 100% sure

Nothing is that great with water, but at least BB cream & tinted moisturizer are harder to tell the difference when your face gets wet.

I LOVE Laura Mercier's Oil Free Tinted Moisturizer. I wear it year round because I really don't like the feel of foundation on my face (too heavy). It offers a nice coverage that evens out my skin tone.

  • I would SO JUDGE you if you were my coworker.

When I was at our other location, we had someone who would walk around without shoes. It totally grossed me out.

Yeah, that always bothered me too. You're not at home, this is our office. I don't need to be smelling feet all day because you can't be bothered to keep your shoes on lol
  • @banana468 Happy Birthday! You can get foundation matched at Sephora and they will give you samples of foundation for free. I use It cosmetics CC cream and love it. It is a little richer and offers more coverage than a BB cream. It also uses zinc oxide as the sunscreen which is what my derm recommends since it is a physical not a chemical block. On days I don't wear makeup, I use a sunscreen I get from the derm.
  • @banana468 happy birthday! Use use bare minerals’ B.B. cream - bc I don’t feel like putting on a whole foundation layer and the B.B. cream gives my skin a more polished look so my unevenness isn’t noticeable. Highly recommend it! Incentive I started using it I almost completely stopped using regular foundation- only for super special events.

  • @banana468 Happy birthday too!!  Welcome to 38.  I've recently started using Revision Intellishade.  It's a tinted moisturizer with SPF, so super light, which I like as I've never worn foundation.  I found BB creams too heavy for me.  I got a sample at en event my dermatologist had and really liked it, so I guess he sucked me in.  :)  It's pretty expensive, but I only use a pea size drop each time, so it's lasting a while.  It comes in an original and matte version, and the sample had one of each.  I got about 5 wears out of each sample.

  • I splashed my maderia sauce on me cutting up my chicken at lunch.  I went to the bathroom to "spot clean" it and it was a very long walk back to my office.

It's so sad.  She gave birth today too, which should have been the most happiest and exciting day of her life with him at her side.

oh - here's another confession. I don't quite get the "4 men" comment.  Can someone explain the four men in the world....

Apparently he was (according to TMZ-- like I said, too invested).

I really feel bad for her; her first marriage ends because her husband is abusing drugs and alcohol (and allegedly cheating) and now this while she is days away from giving birth in the city he lives in.

It's a shortened version of a snarky comment along the lines of "there are more than 4 men in the world, go find another one".

Typically used in letters where "my b/f is so great, except for (major character defect/dealbreaker)".

It's akin to "plenty of fish in the sea".

    From my understanding, it's like the "only 2 types of people in the world" {I apologize if that doesn't help, I'm not sure how else to explain it}
  • oh - here's another confession. I don't quite get the "4 men" comment.  Can someone explain the four men in the world....
One of our former regs coined it...meaning that people write into these advice columns about their relationship drama and like that person is the only person for them, even though they're being treated terribly or the relationship is just not good.
  • I confess that I just used company time and resources to qualify for a trip to the Kentucky Derby with ESPN radio hosts.

I feel like this is only a confession because my boss is within earshot.

Also, if anyone cares, I really like the Bare Minerals liquid foundation. And Philosophy now makes a Purity Made Simple moisturizer and it's awesome for my oily, acne prone skin. Really lightweight.
