I've also heard "black is for funerals." I've also heard that wearing red upstages the bride? Who comes up with these things? Though, I guess now I know why that one girl in "Moms and Maids" was having a stroke over her MOH's red lipstick.

    Damnit, I missed that one!
Cliffs notes: SHE WANTS TO WEAR RED LIPSTICK WITH A YELLOW DRESS! CRISIS! AHHHHH! STOP LIGHT!
GOOD GRIEF. I cannot handle this nonsense. Why do you care what other people are wearing??

    Real life conversation:
FI: Do you want the groomsmen to wear specific shoes?
    Me: Brown shoes.
    FI: But they won't match?
    Me: DO NOT CARE.
    FI: Are you sure?
Me: The day I start caring about other people's shoes smack me upside the head because I have lost my damn mind.
ugh, don't get me started on that.

We told H's brothers to wear grey suits, white shirts. Didn't care about the tone, fabric, weight, stripes or not, etc. His sister LOST it on me- well, what are they supposed to wear?! Black shoes? Brown shoes?

    ME: I do not care.
Her: Well, SOMEONE has to care- what do you think they are going to show up in if you DON'T CARE?!
ME: Listen, your brothers are all grown men and I have never seen them dressed inappropriately. I have to assume they will show up in some sort of grey suit and some sort of dress shoes.

Lo and behold, THEY DID. And I cannot remember what color shoes they wore or what shade of grey it was. And they looked great. And nothing caught on fire.

    BUT THAT ONE'S WEARING BLACK
    DID YOUR DAY IMPLODE?
Same here. We asked our GM to wear a navy suit. didn't care what shoes. DH wore brown boots along with others and some wore black shoes. One GM couldn't afford a new suit so he wore his black tux. We're still married y'all.

  • Same thing happened to us. We said grey suits and everybody but one wore light gray, one wore dark. One also lost his tie.

    No one died. Shocking!

  • **Trapped in the box***

I wore white to my grandmother's funeral when I was 16.  So..........what meaning does that have?!

    image
  • FMIL almost had a conniption fit when I told her that we're having the groomsmen wear their own black dress shoes (with a rented grey suit). BUT THEY WON'T MATCH!!!!

I've probably been told 100 times by male friends and relatives how uncomfortable rental shoes are. I'm not making them do that.

  • First of all, I'm so disappointed in all of you that I come home to a 7 page thread with not one iota of drama/SS behaviour in it.  Listen ladies, I need entertainment while I cook dinner.  ;)

I tend to wear cocktail stuff to weddings too, and I've always followed a similar "rule" mentioned here of showing 1 thing instead of all things (short skirt or low cut or no back).  I find all can take you from classy to slutty, but that's also just my personality and view on what looks good.

I do find though that lots of the younger kids at weddings (17-24ish) are tending to wear more club wear dresses versus cocktail style dresses.  They're all very low cut, super short and super tight.  Not my cup of tea, and I I find myself watching them to see if I am going to see underwear (or that they're not wearing any).   Maybe I'm just getting old now.

Anyway, weddings here happen in the afternoon, followed by a 3 hour gap and then evening reception, so even for "afternoon weddings", we're all still in cocktail/evening wear.

Ditto all of this, except I'm not cooking dinner yet

What I wore to the last 3 weddings I went to:

This but in mint instead of black (I didn't even see it in black in the store, I guess they were out of stock)

This dress with like a knit bolero cardigan thing (it was in October and I was cold. I think I may have even worn tights or panty hose, not sure)

DH and the groomsmen wore whatever black suits they wanted, white shirts and red ties (which we purchased for the guys). I have no idea what shoes anyone but DH wore. None of the guys wore exactly the same thing. Hell, one of the groomsmen wore a 3-piece suit. No fucks were given.

  • I think that looks fine for a wedding.

I tend to dress fairly conservatively, so I would never wear a dress that goes above a few inches above the knee.

Of the two weddings I have been to recently, I wore the same denim knee-length skirt (denim! GASP!) and strappy black flat sandals. I wore two different tank tops with them.  They were both summer outdoor weddings and pretty casual.

The other weddings I've been to recently, I've been a bridesmaid.
  • In fact, I'm hoping I can grab this dress on sale in the next few months, to wear to a wedding later this year: http://www.modcloth.com/shop/dresses/you-nova-you-love-it-dress

GASP! WHITE! with SPARKLES! and it is SHORT!
I was just about to bitch you out for wearing white to a wedding that isn't yours but that's honestly gold.

    FAB

Although my wedding dress is goldish so if you showed up to my wedding in that dress we would have a for serious problem.

Just kidding, for everyone who doesn't realize.

I know what you mean but I don't think you should say that you watch 17 year olds to see if you can see their underwear.

But my FI's cousins wear those tiny club dresses, and I always wonder who they are trying to pick up at a family wedding. For sure there aren't too many young bachelors who aren't related to them. UGH

It's stunning. Like, unbelievably so. The embroidery on mine is slightly different than the picture (mine is a smaller floral design with some metallic threads woven in), but the same shape and neckline. I get amazing cleavage out of it without looking like I'm trying too hard. It's appeared at 6 different weddings. Not bad for something I picked up on a clearance rack for $25!

I used to work at a large, upscale department store chain. 25% employee discount plus we were allowed to use the 20% coupons that ran in the paper every week. That dress was 50% off the original price, then put on the "additional 50% off the lowest price" rack.

I got one of my wedding dresses the same way. It ended up being around 12 bucks after all the discounts and coupons. I am a bargain shopping queen. That's how I got 3 gorgeous dresses for my wedding, with alterations and cleaning, for $200.
