But not in the same way. It wasn't a recognized government declaring war on another sovereign nation by attacking a military instillation. Hence the reason 9/11 was a "terrorist" attack rather than a declaration of war. In the eyes of the extremists, it was certainly war. As defined by actual rules of engagement? No.

We can debate the validity and application of the Geneva conventions as it relates to terrorism, guerilla warfare, and the sovereignty of nation-states, but that's an entirely different conversation.

An act of war by WHOM? A dozen guys in a cave in Afghanistan? A dozen guys without a country can't declare a war.

Unless they're playing RISK or something. And then it's on. Except that land wars in Asia always turn out badly.

Olive Garden has some kind of dessert that has a bunch of teeny tiny chocolate chips on the outside. I don't know how anyone could hate that. I think that dessert could unite the entire world.

ETA: It is the black tie mousse cake. A kumbayah in my mouth.

Here's the thing, the Taliban did not represent that country, hence the term "terrorist organization."

  • I hate when new yorkers act like they own the sole rights to 9/11. yeah, it happened there. I get it. but it doesn't change anything.
and if 9/11 only affected new yorkers, I'd like my texas soldiers back please.
  • not necessarily.  lots of acts in history resulted in the start of wars or in countries joining wars already in progress...  assassination of archduke ferndinand, sinking of lusitania... and the bombing of pearl harbor

Well, I also hate chocolate, so there's that.  It may be my own personal mind process when I hear "Olive Garden"  It goes like this:  dinner at Olive Garden with ILs.  I dislike Olive Garden, I dislike ILs.  Then FIL LICKS the bottle of wine that is being shared by the table.  You know, when you pour a glass and a little wine dribble escapes onto the stem of the bottle?  Yep, he licked it.

  • I think the terrorist attacks were an act of war. I thought that was understood. it was an act of holy war by an extremist group.
I'm sure THEY saw it as an act of war, in any case.

    As a follow up:

Just because Syria, for example, funnels money to Hezbollah and openly allows several declared "terrorist" organizations to operate within their borders does NOT mean they openly condone every last thing said terrorist organizations do and most CERTAINLY does not mean they have/will declare open war on Israel.

I'm not defending Syria as awesome and blameless, I'm just using an example.

And the Taliban government of Afghanistan also doesn't count for shiit. They're not even "really Muslim."
